Fresh bread, baked goods, pastries, sweet and savoury treats … Who doesn’t love a quality bakery?

A local bakery is a great place to buy fresh bread for lunch, a treat for morning or afternoon tea, a tart for dinner or a sweet for dessert. Today, many artisan bakeries also are trained in making barista quality coffee and they serve gorgeous teas.

In Canberra especially, there are a multitude of bakeries. From specialists in cakes, to gluten-free range, Swedish bakeries to vegan galore – there’s a bakery for everyone in our little town. That’s why we’re here to help. In our article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a great bakery, and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great bakery?

Choosing the right bakery makes sure everyone enjoys their favourite bakery treat. It takes the stress out of buying goods that might not make the grade.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a bakery.

  • Excellent range. First and foremost, look for a bakery that offers a delectable selection of fresh bread and baked goods, both sweet and savoury.
  • Quality. You’ll want to choose a bakery that makes everything in-house, so you’re getting super fresh goods. You might also want to treat yourself to artisan products, created with high-quality ingredients and made by hand.
  • Great prices. The best bakeries charge a fair price for the quality of their goods, especially given that artisan and hand-formed products take a lot of love and time to create.
  • Services. You might just want a bakery that serves takeaway. Or you might want to choose one that has eat-in services , including quality coffee, tea and other drinks. You might also want to select a bakery that has a great vibe and a dining area to sit and relax.
  • Staff. If you love service with a smile, you’ll want to choose a bakery with great staff. Bakeries can get super busy, so you’ll want staff that can serve you well, even when things get stressful for them.

La Baguette by R&M at the ANU school of art. Best croissants and baguettes I’ve had in Canberra!

Florey do great “Saigon pork rolls”..healthy taste great and only $5.50, best pies are at Griffith butcher or Ellanes at dickson

The bakery at Kingston (nor Silo, the asain one) does one of the best sausage rolls ever, and cheap. Also the cafe in the John Gorton Building does a mean sausage roll, but pricey but yum. I also rate Dobinsons for a sausage roll.

For sure Astrojax, I am also mightily chuffed. Next topic should be best hot chocolate I reckon.

I like this thread. Harmless and interesting, though strangely passionate.

So firstly, I would like to note that the quiches at the Braidwood bakery are still nice. Very salty but nice. I had one recently.

And secondly, that chilli hot chocolate is a treat I have allowed myself twice in about 10 months, and the first time I nearly started crying at how good it was. That first was in Sydney in Glebe Point Road, and I left a poetry thing early for it after it had been whispering to me all day. The second was more recently at Cocoa Black, and it was good, but it did not make me cry. Am I asking too much of a hot beverage? How pleasurable should hot chocolate be? Does absence really make the taste buds grow more sensitive?

Maybe it’s just me; I’ve been thinking about pickled onions and chips all day.

For sure Astrojax, I am also mightily chuffed. Next topic should be best hot chocolate I reckon.

Got to agree with Astrojax in post#6 re the Blue Lagoon bakery for the best ever meat pies. It was one of the winter staple foods for the bus ride home from after school activities. The other was a bag of chips with vinegar from the seafood shop near the bottom bus stop.

Nowadays, I reckon the best meat pies can be found at Pie in the Sky on Sydney’s Northern outskirts.

I agree so totally with vinegar on chips. Tomato sauce just tastes wrong. (although with your user name, I’m surprised you don’t prefer sauce!) I don’t really miss chips, until I think of vinegar. Reminds me of Melbourne.

But I even liked pickled onions.

i’m right chuffed a fellow rioter remembers the blue lagoon – i still feel the devastation when i recall the day i discovered ‘new management’.

and yes, only vinegar on chips, preferably balsamic. ‘matoe sauce? no! pickled onions? very yes!

Asian Delights bakery in Charnwood do pretty good pies and sausage rolls. Their curry pies are one of the best I’ve had.

KB1971, the user name comes from the size and colour of my preferred motorbike. Tomato sauce should be injected into a pie from one of those big bottles until it oozes out. I do not like the move to little measured doses.

Comic_and_Gamer_Nerd9:08 pm 19 Apr 13

Hard to choose if I like tomato sauce or vinegar better. Both are incredible.

RE: Mexican food, we use guac, which has some sour cream in it, but is perfect.

The best chips we used to get when we were kids was from the Pambula milk bar. Malcom used to give us $1 worth drenched in vinegar with a little salt wrapped in paper. We then used to then rip the end out of the paper so the chips would not get cold.

The chips would be all soft & steamy & oh so tasty in their vinigary goodness………god I miss them.

what sort did you have? i find their offerings a little hit and miss, and their sausage rolls’ pastry too flaky.

have had some nice fare there, though. i do like their chocolate and macadamia tarts. mmmm.

The Shepherds/potato pie. Ended up with a bit of gristle/artery stuck between my teeth & the potato tasted like Deb (not saying it was Deb but that is what it tasted like). Very underwhelming, shame, I have had some nice stuff from there.

And while I’m on a roll – Dobinsons. Why do public servants rate their sausage rolls so much? The after burps are horrific.

I’m not a public servant, so hopefully I won’t be dismissed, but, how could I forget, the Mexican pie from Dobinsons is the best pie in Canberra!

Couldn’t disagree more – the Mexican pie from Dobinsons had me gagging and retching after one bite (I did actually start retching)… why would you put sour cream inside a pie before cooking it? The whole point of sour cream on Mexican food (a theory I don’t personally subscribe to as I hate the stuff) is that it cools the hot flavours… how can it cool anything when it is this curdled and unspeakably foul muck ruining my pie?

I am a Mexican pie devotee, I’ll order one in any bakery I enter that has them, have eaten them all over the country and I can say with authoirty the Dobinsons one was one of the filthiest things I have tasted and it went straight in the bin.

For those fellow Mexican pie lovers – Tura Beach bakery – sublime. But they sell out early.

If you want to *cool the flavours*, you probably should not be eating Mexican anything.

Absolutely. The application of sour cream to any Mexican product breaks my heart. As does copious amounts of melted cheddar cheese… *shudder*

I had a lemon tart from Dobinson’s yesterday arvo which really hit the spot. Reasonably priced sweets there. Been years since I’ve had a pie or sandwich from there though. That’s due to not going past it much more than anything.

i have long coveted the mully, 😉 so i can report that the curtin shops bakery has disappointing sausage rolls and an average cheese and bacon pie. i’m still looking for excellence in sausage rolls. the bakery at fyshwick markets – grain and something? – does a mean one. am so rarely that side of town at sausage roll time…

Went to Ricetta the other day in Manuka. They had lovely and reasonably priced woodfired bread from their pizza ovens. It was an unexpected bonus! Otherwise, I’d go Knead at Belconnen markets.

Kingston Bakery. The Steak and Mushroom pies are lovely! And the cakes are divine…

Personally, I like the chicken curry pie at the Goulburn bakery.

This comment is interesting as I frequent both places and they have the same management team eg. they are owned by the same people. I also disagree strongly with the increased prices on weekends/pubelic holidays.

Having said that, their coffee is consistently above average so they keep getting my business.

I personally find Cornucopia so very overrated. For what they charge I expect something pretty darn good, but I find their pies bland and their quiches taste like they’ve been sitting there for hours (at 12.30pm).

“I do want to give a razz to the little bakery at the Yarralumla shops – absolute garbage”

15 years ago – and freshly migrated from the culinary paradise that is Western Europe – I asked the girl behind the counter when their Danishes had come out of the oven as I’d had one that tasted stale the day before. When she said she didn’t know, I prompted her to go ask the baker and she refused. Haven’t gone in there since. I have a ludicrously long memory for bad service and low quality products.

+1 for the bakery at Hawker; good prices, fairly brisk service. Take cash though!

ANU bakery is overpriced, dry and dull. The cakes look ok, but as far as the sausage rolls go, it’s all gone Pete Tong. Cheese and Ham danish tasted like it was a bit off before freezing/thawing/cooking

210 in Curtin is decent and speedy, would recommend their pies and pastries over the Yarralumla ‘Harrods’ bakery – am I being pedantic or is it too much to expect that when a person buys a cake with a nice decoration/cream/topping on it, the vendor might think to put it in a box rather than squish it all together in a little paper bag?

As an aside, does anyone know if they do Belgian Buns in Canberra/Australia?

have to agree, jester, with the rutherglen review – some of the best pies i’ve ever had there. worth a detour for lunch in any melbourne trip. but the fare at that town with the submarine in (brain phase – forgotten…) in the bakery on the left, southbound, are pretty good… but you’d be hungry again by rutherglen! 🙂

I like the steak and red wine, plain, chicken and veg, and lamb pies from Gum Tree Pies at the weekend EPIC and south side farmers markets. http://www.gumtreepies.com.au/

It’s not a pie or a sausage roll, but Garran Shops bakery make super lamingtons, my yardstick for a bakery sweet thing.

Ohhhhhhh yess, they are AWESOME! I have had the pepper steak pie from there & its da bomb.

Dickson – that bakery did a great sweet chilli pumpkin quiche when I frequented there.

Hughes – 210 Degrees Patisserie & Bakery – great sausage roll.

Curtin Bakery – Divine Vanilla Slice.

I used to rate Bakery Culture at Jamison Shops, but they changed hands/renovated a while back and their pies seems to change. The curry pie went from sublime to, well, meh.

Kuma pies in Cooma make delicious pies, though you won’t be able to eat them without a knife and fork. (Suits me fine as I can’t stand crunchy pastry)

Yeah, they have been bad for a long time and I think recently were closed by the health authorities.

I do love a good sausage roll. We’ve got a Michel’s and an independent (or much smaller chain) bakery in Erindale. Nothing to write home about either of them, but they aren’t awful either.

The new bakery at Hume called Bread Nerds is a favourite – great pies, sausage rolls and fabulous sweet stuff. Apparently now open for saturday breaky to. I do also like the bakery at Fyshwick markets.

If you are a regular and can get served. I stood there for 5 minutes one morning before walking out – There was two girls serving and they both ignored me to look after the local hi-vis clad unwashed that arrived well after I did.

Their menu lists steak and pepper pie, but I’ll be damned if they have ever had any available, and that’s first thing in the morning when I’m looking for a decent feed.

I can also recommend people avoid the Brothers Oven (Homeworld) like the plague. It seems they use oil in place of butter, regularly use hair fillings and some very cranky service.

We have relatives out Boorawa way and we stopped in town to get coffee from the Bakery. I have to say that the Sausage Rolls at the Bakery in town were the best I’ve ever had. I’m not as big a fan as my wife and son but had a taste and was truly impressed. In saying that, the coffee was outstanding as well.

Cornucopia for sausage rolls and pies. Not the usual kind, so may not be your thing

If we are talking coast pies, then Hayden’s Pies in Ulladulla beat everything in Canberra

Farrer Pie shop makes fresh meat and variety pies, his sausage rolls are pretty good too. worth driving from Kambah to buy one… The owner is the baker.

I quite enjoy the bread and rolls from the bakery at Kaleen Plaza.

Can’t comment on anything else they sell.

Also I don’t know why everyone raves on about Dobinson’s in the city. Their sausage rolls are so oily, pies tasteless, service is terrible and would be nice if they cooked some normal bread. I do live their tarts but. Esp the hazelnut one.

It’s been a while but I recall the pie pastry at Danny’s in Narrabudah was yum.

The Griffith bakery hasn’t been quite the same since they took Lamb Moussaka Pies off their menu but they still do some good pies.

Glad someone has had a pleasent experience at Bread Nerds.

I havn’t.

First time, about 2pm, walked in to give them a try. I was the only customer. Lass behind the counter was busy making 2 of the slowest coffees I have experienced. I guess for the couple out the back in the kitchen. After standing around for about 5 minutes, I was told I would be served shortly. I said OK and left.

Second time, as this establishment is a bit flasher than the other Hume establishments, ordered coffee and cake for two. Again, nil other customers, but service was unacceptably slow. Product was ordinary.

Sorry Bread Nerds, you have lost me.

Actually, I have had some variable experiences there. We normally would drop in close to 11am on a Wednesday on the way home from four year old swim lessons. The first time I went I was so not impressed with the service – older woman, should have known better, probably one of the owners, (I know it’s a husband and wife team). I considered making a comment on the their Facebook page, but thought I’d try them again just in case. Couldn’t fathom her surliness as they really weren’t that busy – although because it’s small it may seem as if it is.

Second time, really lovely young girl, so thought no more about surly lady. Have been a few times more now and have again encountered the surly lady. Just unhelpful and does make you question why it’s worth going there. But the products are just so nice.

Perhaps next time I get surly lady, I might say something.

A smile costs nothing.

Oh and the pies at New Adaminaby are pretty choice after a cold day chasing the big one..

Robertson Pies….. yum.

I dont really get to local bakeries for anything these days but I always get the caroway and rye sourdough from Fyshwick Markets – supplied still warm by Bread Nerds..

Good test of a sourdough is check the ingredients for yeast or other leavening agents, of which you will find none on bread nerds sourdough

Braidwood.

As if. I did my full school years in Braidwood from ’85-’97. Our school Canteen was supplied by the original Braidwood Bakery and basically every single school day from about year 4 on my Lunch consisted of a “proper” Braidwood pie. That crap they serve at the new Braidwood Bakery I wouldn’t feed to my chooks and doesn’t deserve to be served under the same name as the ones I remember.

We seem to end up there every now and again on coast trips for some odd reason, and every time I’m severely disappointed.

As for a good one, the little Bakery section in the Friendly Grocers at Chifley shops does a pretty good job.

I certainly like the filling of Elaine’s pies, but wish they weren’t so slapdash about the pastry. It’s not so much an issue for me, because providing I have the tools to hand, I always use a fork to eat pies in the correct 3-phase approach (Lid – contents – base – sauce in the middle if it’s a particularly bland offering).

The Flute in Fyshwick also has great offerings (if there are any left by the time you get there).

I stopped going there since they charged me extra because it was a public holiday. Greedy buggers. And the quality has gone downhill over the years too.

.

Us too, never heard of it before and wont stop there unless I have to.

Its too short a drive to stop on Braidwood anyway…..

been there a few times and it is ok, but I’m surprised they don’t have eftpos

Bakery Culture in Jamison Plaza – definitely worth the drive out.

Slightly out of range, I know, but I wont be going back to the bakery near Maccas at Goulburn any time soon. They charge you somethng like an extra dollar if you want to use a card instead of cash, the service was rude and surly and (worst of all) the chicken pie was luke warm and ordinary.

Danny’s Bakery at Narrabundah has excellent pies and sausage rolls – ignore the less than salubrious surroundings…

I used to think Elaines in Fyshwick were the best in town but we got one the other week and it was terrible. No where near as good as the one a couple of months earlier.

I don’t mind Elaine’s, but then I probably haven’t been since last winter, so perhaps the quality has dropped off, but I’ll be sure to give them another try.

Flute also does good pies that are a little bit fancy.

And on the weekends a curry pie from Brumby’s at Lyneham Shops usually serves me well.

For pies, it’s Mawson shops you must head.

Can’t you just give them money?

cant go past hawker bakery

Comic_and_Gamer_Nerd4:34 pm 18 Mar 13

Yeah avoid braidwood. Since they renovated its become incredibly mediocre.

The cake shop at chapman is pretty decent. + 1 for hawker and brunos

A very important subject AstroJax

When it comes to sausage rolls you can’t beat Cornucopia in Braddon but Dobinsons does a pretty mean one.

For pies, it’s Mawson shops you must head.

Pies and sausage rolls. everyone wants them, everyone loves them. where do you get them?

I can’t stand them myself, so I don’t buy them anywhere.

Mind you, I lived in Cornwall for 14 years, so I’m also ruined as far as pasties go.

if you’re in the Hughes area, Adam and the crew at 210 Degrees Bakery at Hughes shops are certainly worth a look in!

If you’re talking about Inner North I think the best is Cornacuppa on Mort St, Braddon.

I live in Macgregor3:33 pm 18 Mar 13

agree with posts about Kippax and Bread Nerds at Hume (especially if you like bagels). I like the service and selection at the Erindale Cakery Bakery and always drop in and buy something if i’m in the neighbourhood. I think they won a big regional bakery prize recently, since management changed about 18 months ago. Also I always stop if i’m driving through Boorowa as the bakery there is quite good too.

Nimmitabel.

Used to frequent Nimmitable bakery on the way to Merimbula, but have swapped to the cafe on the other side of the street, purely because the staff at the other place are rude and don’t care if you have a good experience because they think they have the tourist business sewn up. I posted on their facebook site about it the last time as I’d had enough of being treated like I was privileged to buy something. They contacted me back and then deleted the conversation, which is probably rule 101 of what not to do on facebook when dealing with an unsatisfied customer. Their right obviously though.

The best pies I’ve ever had in Canberra were from the Butcher at the Griffith shops, really excellent.

Great meat from there, but always found the bakery stuff had an odd taste.

I concur on Dickson Cakes – I’m something of a regular for their sausage rolls. The best in town though are those from Pavlova Place in Fyshwick.

The Kaleen Bakery (at Kaleen Plaza) does beautiful Saigon rolls and Panini. The Saigon Rolls have a great crunch and taste. The rest of the family likes the Panini. They are not at all like Italian bread, as they are soft, but they have a nice taste and good texture. The rest of their stuff is ok, nothing to write home about, but the rolls are fabulous.

They’re never nice to me, but damn their rolls are good.

Chisholm Bakery for the best pies in Canberra. Sausage rolls are not bad either. They used to win every year at the Canberra Show, not sure if they still bother entering.

Oh yes i love the pies and especially the tarts!

Can’t agree on the ANU bakery. Expensive. Pies are soggy. Sausage rolls are tasteless. Pretty ordinary IMO.

Bruno’s at Mawson does amazingly nice pastries. Don’t get there very often, but the layers of pastry soaked in yummo syrup but still crunchy … miraculous.

I once got a Mexican sausage roll from a little Vietnamese bakery in Bungendore. When I ordered I predicted that the Mexican flavour was probably only there to disguise its inferior quality. I was wrong. Best sausage roll I ever had.

The bakery in alltree court in Woden is good as the hawker bakery’s

Not sure if it’s still there, seeing as it’s been a couple of years, but the little bakery at the ANU Union did very respectable sausage rolls.

I think the true test for a pie is the curry pie. So good when it’s done properly, and almost unexplainably difficult to find a decent one.

i always rekkun the true test is the sausage roll – but to each his/her own…

the blue lagoon bakery at katoomba many moons ago had sublime s/rs – but a devestating experience years ago when i went in expectantly and found changed management and [significant] quality detriment 🙁

i also remember the anu bakery fondly. and campbell shops was anothrer morning tea run favourite.

have heard excellent things of the nerds (love their bagels – choku bai jo-sourced) and need to make the long excursion south to try their fare in situ

more??

Bakery Culture at Jamison Plaza.
Brilliant sausage rolls and pies, excellent breads and pastry– I believe it to be locally owned and run, but even if it’s not, the prices are good, the product great and there’s even service with a smile.

The new bakery at Hume called Bread Nerds is a favourite – great pies, sausage rolls and fabulous sweet stuff. Apparently now open for saturday breaky to. I do also like the bakery at Fyshwick markets.

The best pies I’ve ever had in Canberra were from the Butcher at the Griffith shops, really excellent.

The Bakery at Campbell shops is also pretty good.

Probably the worst thing about living in Gungahlin is the lack of traditional bakeries.

The little bakery inside Kippax shopping centre isn’t bad. By no means is it gourmet but it’s not a bad spot to grab a pie or a lamington 🙂
It’s run by 2 lovely people who are there everyday , they are lovely!
