Best Beer Gardens in Canberra

CrocodileGandhi 26 September 2011 35

Afternoon Rioters,

As the weather heats up, thoughts turn to spending more time outdoors. I’m keen to find out where the best beer gardens are located to enjoy a few cold drinks on a Friday afternoon. Bonus points given to those gardens which are in sight of actual greenery.

While all submissions are welcome, places in and around the city or parliamentary triangle are preferred.

Cheers!

The Ha Ha bar in Belconnen isn’t bad for a quick drink on a warm friday afternoon.

your mates back yard, it tends to be fairly exclusive and the opening hours are erratic but the drinks are way cheaper and the company tends to be good.

failing that, I don’t think people realise how many of the quite nicely situated cafes throughout braddon, the city, manuka, kingston are licensed/byo

ooh and I almost forgot, the mawso!

pork barrel in the rose garden – nice beers, leafy surrounds?

Agree. Just avoid the Swill. That’s a really poor beer. Tehy had a nice german one (also by Zierholz) but for some reason went back to just having Swill. That stuff tastes worse than my home brew.

Hotel Kurrajong is also quite nice in spring, summer, autumn.

El Rancho Manuka.

Have they turned that little patch out the back into a beer garden? Huh. We used to scuttle out there to hide when the grog police turned up to catch all us under age drinkers.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Olims- a nice place on a summer’s Friday afternoon after work, also incorporates a colourful passing parade as the hours progress.

Olims is brilliant on ANZAC Day. No bogans, only serving and ex serving, plus mates or people who actually respect what ANZAC Day stands for.

I’m not too sure about Friday afternoons, but on Sunday afternoons the Lighthouse in Belconnen is quite nice. It turns a bit rough on Saturday nights, but Sundays are relaxed, over looking the water in a new beer garden, and they have a live DJ playing, and a free sausage sizzle.

Highly recommended on Sunday afternoons!

I was just thinking I left the Lighthouse off my list. Saturday nights aren’t to bad there, the Wednesday night uni party is always a fun night to be there…

I hear Honkytonks (where Mama Trattoria’s used to be in Garema) will have a beer garden. Not sure when it opens though…

Rose Cottage and the Irish Club.

Particularly Rose Cottage with live bands outside, haven’t been there in donks though.

+1 for Fellows Bar at University House at ANU. They often have some sort of music act playing in the beer garden on Friday afternoons as well.

Used to also love the ANU Staff Centre, later called Old Canberra House. Dunno if there’s still a pub in there, but the gardens were stunning.

There is a licenced cafe called the Ivy Cafe at Old Canberra House. There was a post on The Riot on 13 Sep about their Friday night drinks session kicking off, including happy hour and live music. Haven’t benn over to check it out yet sadly…
