The Australian Privacy Founation invites everyone to the Australian ‘Big Bother Awards’ 2009 (BBA2009), 11 November, at the Pot Belly.

The call for nominations for the BBA2009 was very successful. The Orwells are the Big Brother Awards that recognise organizations, technologies and people that have invaded or threaten to invade privacy. The Smiths acknowledge people who protect us from privacy invasions. From a diverse range of nominations we received for the “Orwell” categories of the “Big Brother 2009” Award, finalists for the “Orwells” have been selected. Information about the finalists is available at http://www.privacy.org.au/bba.

The Canberran public are invited to the local BBA2009 Awards Event (7-30 to 10pm) on 11 November 2009 at the Pot Belly, Weedon Close, Belconnen. Entry is free and you can buy your drinks and food from the bar.

The format of the evening will be:
• An old style public debate (complete with soapbox) to discuss the relative merits of the finalists for the “Orwell” categories of:
1. Most Invasive Technology
2. Worst Corporate Invader
3. Worst Public Agency or Official.

Representatives from the finalists have been invited. Other speakers will come from ‘the floor’. There will be plenty of opportunity to have your say:
• A vote to determine the winner for each category.
• Announcement of the winners.

I’m a bit sad I only read this thread now. That might have been an interesting excuse to go to the pub.

A small but dedicated group of Privacy supporters, both Australian Privacy Foundation members and the public alike, turned up to the Pot Belly last night to have their say in the 2009 Big Brother Awards. An even smaller number of the public arrived to see what the hell privacy had to do with a recent television show. The latter group didn’t stay long once the relative merits of each nominee started to be debated.

A press release announcing the winners is here:

Thanks to those who turned up – you made it a success. We’re already planning next year!

If the award for the people who protect from privacy invasions is called the Smith. Then shouldn’t the award for privacy invasions be
called the O’Brien as a direct opposite for what the characters/award embody not just the name of the author?

I could take that up…
