Chief Minister Gallagher is trying to entice the denizens of Forde and Bonner onto buses with free rides on Route 55 next week:

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, today announced that Bonner and Forde residents will be offered free bus travel for one week on the new Route 55, which is being introduced as part of ACTION’s Network 12.

“To celebrate the introduction of the new Route 55 service into Bonner and Forde which connects with the Gungahlin Marketplace, ACTION will be offering free travel for residents of those suburbs for the first week of Network 12 which starts on Monday 28 May,” the Chief Minister said.

“This will give the residents the opportunity to experience the ease of catching buses and the range of benefits they provide.”

Commuters will receive a free transfer ticket to use on connecting routes within the next 90 minutes. If return trips are taken outside the 90 minute transfer period or do not begin on Route 55, a fare will need to be paid.

Given the bus only goes to Gungahlin, takes a semi obscure route that unnecessarily loops back on itself and only runs once an hour for most of the day, I doubt they will be forgoing much revenue..

Seeing as we the taxpayers are already subsidising 80% of the cost of public transport, I’m left wondering why we just don’t pay for the whole bloody thing. At least it would give us bragging rights……but I still wouldn’t use it.
