Some things are just perfect combinations: think bacon and eggs, salt and pepper, a meat pie and tomato sauce, Joey Leilua and a behind-the-back pass. But according to online food ordering app Menulog, we can now add butter chicken and footy to that list.

During the 2018 NRL and AFL grand finals, the Eagles, Roosters and butter chicken all came out on top, with the popular curry causing a massive upset by beating strong favourite pizza in the battle of footy foods.

Menulog found that the most-ordered dishes by Canberrans during the 2018 AFL grand final were fried rice, butter chicken and zucchini balls, while butter chicken, jasmine rice and pad thai took out the top three orders during the NRL grand final.

Menulog said there was a spike in orders to Punjabi Hut in Queanbeyan and Mirchi Indian Cuisine in Ngunnawal during both grand finals last year, proving to be two of the most popular places for Canberrans to get their butter chicken fix.

There is expected to be a huge spike in orders of a cooked chook on Sunday night as fans settle in for the Canberra Raiders clash against Sydney Roosters.

The dishes topping the list for both AFL and NRL grand final nights across each state were:

  • NSW – pad thai
  • ACT – butter chicken
  • Queensland – butter chicken
  • Victorians – margarita pizza
  • Western Australia – special fried rice
  • South Australians – Hawaiian pizza
