Just letting fellow RiotACTers that Sue’s Kitchen (Vietnamese) in Scullin has changed hands. In fact it’s turning CHINESE.

I will miss going there. It was great for a quick, cheap meal and Sue always made you feel very welcome as did her daughter.

Has anyone tried the Vietnamese at Watson shops… I think there’s a family connection with Sue.. Welcome any feedback.

Well, yes, Sue’s Kitchen is Chinese these days. Consistently great Chinese. We moved into Scullin upon returning to Canberra and decided to try our local place out.

We must have eaten there at least 20 times since then if we include take away and have found it to be fresh, really well cooked with well balanced flavours and some options you don’t see in other places. It is consistently excellent.

So yes, the old Sue’s Kitchen was excellent. I miss it too, but please give the new owners a go. Its still honest, good food with generous portions at very reasonable prices. I’m a fan!

I have been going to Sue’s Kitchen since she had the shop at Giralang. Always friendly and the food was great. Sad to see her go.

There is a lot of similarity between most of the Chinese restaurants in Canberra. They pretty much share the same menu.

Because that’s what sells, really. The family of a friend of mine runs the only Chinese restaurant in a country town; they started with a menu of dozens and dozens of dishes. After a few months they cut it back to what everybody always ordered- the good ol’ honey chicken, sweet & sour pork etc, Australia’s version of “Chinese food”.

I’m not so impressed with My Friend at Watson. Nice people but bland food. Every now and again I go back hoping things are better.

This is disappointing because they are at my local shops. I still go to Dickson for great Asian.

Mys is great! Good food at good prices.
Can Tho in Belco is great as well ( in fact, in the opinion of an overweight fast food eater, the best).

They are somehow related to the Viet place on Cape St Dickson “Phu Phuck” (May have gotten that name wrong!)

Lol. It is “Pho Quoc”. It is not as good as it used to be. One of the owners/chef left and opened up his own place called “My’s Restaurant”. This place located in Weston. It is very good.

Wish I had known, as I would have gone for one last meal. From now on will stick to the tried and true (and tasty) Vietnam Village Inn at Page Shops.

The Viet in Watson – Called something like “My friend” – is very good.
Fresh, fast and cheap

That’s a shame – it was a quality restaurant. There is a lot of similarity between most of the Chinese restaurants in Canberra. They pretty much share the same menu. There are exceptions, naturally (eg Four Rivers). I hope this one will have some originality.

Agreed. I remember her being really friendly.
