I have been creating a google map with the Christmas light locations within the ACT region. Ive taken lists from a couple of web sites and added the in.

Have a look:

http://opshop.org/christmas. Hope it helps people find the best places in town.

Please help out by added any missing locations and voting for the good (and downing those that don’t exist or not worth the drive).

I’m still playing around and am happy to include any (easy) suggestions.

Enjoy.

Ack! The route thingy doesn’t work for me anymore (IE6). It drops a marker on the address I supply and shows all the lights around it, but no route.

Macumba place in Kaleen usually sets the standard. I’m sure they’ll be up there with the best again this year.

Gecko, That is excellent! I’ve waited years for something like this.

Have a good one!

Glad people like it. [OzChick] Ive been trying to get it so that users can upload there own pics but have not been having any luck, if people send them to me (email address on the site) then I can add them to appear in the pop up. I also plan to allow users to add there own comments when the rank a house/street, but its not ready just yet.

As for the directions [Deano] I wish I could get it better, I have been playing around with this and its getting worse not better… I’ll keep thinking about this but it might not happen this year.

No- you lie- street view doesn’t show any lights- even when you look after dark :c)

I can see a bunch of hippies and communists using this map to plan a campaign of flying pickets.

Could I suggest that you make the route planning return you to your starting address so that you do a circuit instead of finishing off miles from home.

Gecko, kudos to you champion! My other half will be mega-impressed when we upgrade from last years wild goose chase.

Why is it that we never seem to hear from greenies about the evils of Christmas lights?

Ummm… because you’re not listening?

There’s a lot of stuff out there, from “just don’t do it” hardliners to “eco-friendly LED xmas lights” sellers.

As with all things, is the joy worth the (environmental) cost? And is it worth worrying about that particular use of energy, among all others? I haven’t done the sums, but I imagine that using gas heaters to heat up smoking spaces outside every pub is a much bigger problem.

Like the “no-plastic-bags” thing, it might have a symbolic value to reduce this usage, or be seen to be.

But the sparkly lights are kind of cute.

Why is it that we never seem to hear from greenies about the evils of Christmas lights? It takes quite a jolt of electricity run all these things!

Is there something infra dig with Xmas lights? There is a distinct Ring of Light effec t on that map.

The inner north and south are either not lighting up or not prepared to share their lighting efforts.

Cool. This is a good idea.

Is there any possiblity of adding pics?

You’ve buried the lead here – the linked website solves the travelling salesman problem! (TIC)

I don’t get on board with this stuff yet, but my wife and a friend of mine certainly do. I’ve forwarded it on to them – thanks on their behalf 🙂

Thats awesome. Thanks!

That’s a seriously slick piece of work.

Thanks Gecko, what a great idea. I love looking at the Christmas lights each year, makes everything feel more christmas like! I will check out the Kambah locations this weekend.
