Wondering what to do with your Mum on Mother’s Day? Want to get out of Canberra and take your Mum on a road trip she’ll love? Or just looking to earn yourself favourite-child status? Whatever your reason, here are some ideas for planning the perfect Mother’s Day in the region. From indulgent country lunches to high tea in the hills to taking a twirl on the dance floor, there’s something for every Mum.

Take a short drive to historic Hall for a lunch or dinner to remember at 1882 Bar & Grill

13 Gladstone Street, Hall

1882 Bar & Grill is just a short drive from the outskirts of Canberra in the tiny, picturesque village of Hall. The vibe is modern and relaxed and there’s a three-course lunch or dinner on offer, as well as a complimentary glass of sparkling on arrival for the guests of honour. And as a bonus, Hall is full of rural charm and character and the perfect place to while away a few hours soaking up its rich history and fabulous country hospitality.

Celebrate your special someone at The Lagoon in Wollongong

George Hanley Drive, North Wollongong

The award-winning Lagoon has been going strong since 1986, with good reason. Their Mother’s Day breakfast will be on the al fresco deck that overlooks the beach, while lunch and dinner will deliver the full restaurant experience. Take a look at the seafood platter option – we have it on reliable authority that it’s right up there with the best in the region.

Head to the hills at Cascades Restaurant

Thredbo Village

If your Mum loves the high country, treat her to a complimentary glass of Mumm at Cascades Brasserie and Grill in the heart of Thredbo, before tucking into all kinds of gastronomic delights including high tea platters, ploughman’s boards and plenty more.

Enjoy beautiful Berrima at The Loch

581 Greenhills Rd Berrima

Berrima is a stunning location full of places to eat, shop and kick back. Shout your mum to an indulgent high tea or a sumptuous, paddock to plate three-course set menu overlooking the tranquil gardens. Enjoy sweet treats including mini rhubarb stripe tarts, moist orange and almond cake with caramelised oranges and honeyed yoghurt, or feast on grilled rainbow trout or pepper crusted beef fillet on a goat’s cheese soufflé. Here’s more about what you can discover in the charming village once you’ve finished indulging.

Get active at the Batemans Bay Mother’s Day Classic

Corrigans Beach Reserve, 59 Beach Rd Batehaven

If your Mum is the sporty type, why not get a group together and make the pilgrimage over the Clyde to Batemans Bay, where you can walk or run with pink-clad participants to raise money for breast cancer research and breast care nurses.

If you’re planning a trip to the South Coast but prefer more leisurely pursuits, here are some to try.

  • Book a ride on the MV Merinda and see the coast from a different perspective.
  • Drive up to one of the lookouts, and have a picnic while lapping up the midday sun. Here are some of our favourite spots.
  • Make a booking at Sudden Echo Day Spa, where your Mum can be pampered with a spa, sauna, massage, body wrap, mineral scrub, a facial, or hand or foot revival.
  • Drive down to Pebbly Beach and make friends with some tame kangaroos.
  • Visit the Botanic Gardens and discover the flora and fauna of the South Coast in more than 42 hectares of parklands. There are BBQ facilities, picnic areas, a play space, a plant shop and café.

Rug up and head to the Polo

4400 Braidwood Rd Tirrannaville

Do something different and join people from all over the world at Goulburn’s prestigious country polo event. There will be raffles and auctions with some fabulous prizes, and Rustic Catering Company will be offering a designated menu of sumptuous food. There will also be a bar and coffee cart operating, so rug up, gather your loved ones and plan your day trip to Goulburn.

Take a twirl on the dancefloor

Cooma Bowling Club, 6 Mawson St Cooma

If your Mum delights in kicking up her heels, Cooma is the place to be on Mother’s Day Eve for a wonderful night of music and dancing. There will be two acts on offer: the first a not-so-serious tribute to Frank Sinatra and the second featuring a string of songs from Buble to Bennett and everything in between. The show is just $25 and for an extra $25 you can shout your Mum to dinner beforehand.

While in Cooma, drop in to The Lott Food Store, Bakery and Cafe, which not only offers delicious meals but the chance to buy your Mum some homewares and quality pantry items. Or drive up to Mt Gladstone Lookout, where you’ll find Miss Heidi’s Tea House: a little corner of Austria which serves seriously delicious pancakes and heart-warming hot chocolate with whipped cream.

High tea with a brewery twist at Tumut River Brewing Co

1 Capper St Tumut

Take a jaunt to the idyllic town of Tumut for a high tea with a brewery twist. Expect a relaxing afternoon, a great mix of savoury and sweet dishes incorporating local brews, upbeat entertainment from Guyy and the Fox, and of course, plenty of beer, wine and cider.
