The CT reports that Attila Kiraly has passed away.

Many older folks would know him from his photography studio in Garema Place.

I worked for him for a while many years ago, he had a strong personality, to put it nicely, but I did learn a lot from him, the appreciation of a good coffee, the joy of a nice piece of speck as well as that as a photographer you must always strive to do your best even if it is only for yourself.

If anyone hears of a memorial or drinks event to commerate his life and contribution to the Canberra photographic community please post details. If I hear of anything I’ll post it here.

Attila did a portrait photograph for our family, I don’t think we bought the negatives at the time. I was wondering if anyone new if the negatives have been kept and are they available? The photo was taken in 1980 or 1981 (I think).

R.Slicker,

I have seen part of the film at the NMA, near where the Holden is.

Dunno, does NPH have a shop, next time I’m up that way I’ll have a look.

When I was working for him he had to do an aerial flight every month or so recording the progress at NPH. Me and the other guy working for him took turns sitting in the back reloading the cameras. Attila hated it, hated flying, door off the plane, harnessed in, hanging out the door taking photos. Afterwards he would be especially cranky.

In retrospect, pretty kickass thing for him to do.

Whatever happened to that stop-motion film he made of the construction of New Parliament House? He mounted a camera on the pole of the beacon on Mt Ainslie pointed at the site before construction began then it took a pic once a week of the construction as it was being built. I heard that he had financial problems and couldn’t finance post production work to finalise the project. It would be great to buy this on DVD and send it to friends overseas.

I remember seeing that somewhere, or at least parts of it, so it must have reached final production (of sorts) somehow?

Hello,

I have recently obtained several very large photos by Attila Kiraly of Parliament House. If you are interested in viewing the photos, please contact me.

If I remember rightly he did our school photos at a well known Catholic school in Dickson way back in the early 80’s.
