A former Canberra journalist, now living in Sydney writes a column for The Canberra Times on Sundays. Jenna Price last week extolled the virtues of Canberra over Sydney. She thinks we should cease the ACT Govt advertising push to get Sydneysiders to move to Canberra, fearing they will bring all their bad habits with them. It was quite convincing til the conclusion, where she lists a few Sydney traits we’d do best to avoid. Unfortunately it seems as if most of them are already here. I guess Jenna hasn’t been back for awhile.
She mentions the Sydney bad habits of: parking meters, red light cameras on every corner and parking police ready to swoop.
She ends with:
“If you let the Sydneysiders into the Capital in droves……Before you know it there will be unpleasant apartment blocks on the shores of the lake; people refusing to take advantage of the fabulous public school system; a surge in road rage; and soaring CPI. You will be allowing chaos into your lives.”
It all sounds pretty familiar doesn’t it. You’d think we could do better in a planned city – at least with leaving adequate parking in the city centre. But I guess there’s no stopping progress.
