Canberra Times Price

By basketcase - 4 April 2011 11

I see the price of the CT is now $1.50.  Being paranoid, I remember just before GST came in, the price was $0.90 and they upped it to a $1.00. Few weeks later when GST was introduced it became $1.10.

So wonder if they are betting on a carbon tax (another CT!) to be introduced and afford an excuse to raise it another 10 cents.

As I only buy one newspaper a week, shouldn’t complain, but you get a bit twitchy when you see prices always on the rise with no corresponding increase in your pension.

What’s Your opinion?

I get the CT delivered on the weekends, and enjoy having a flick through. I used to get it every day, but weekday issues don’t have much in them.

I quite enjoy the Sunday one, it does a better job of being a local paper, kind-of like a Chronical with more content. In the olden days, everyone read the CT, it was worth reading, but in the last decade or so it has become pointless and the SMH seems to be the go-to rag.

I’m surprised it’s not even more expensive to pay for all of the telemarketing calls to my shop.

Does anyone actually still read the Canberra Times?

Sure. But I get mine for free.

I dont actually know anyone who reads the CT. If someone sends me a CT article, i look for a better source before passing it on. As far as stopping paint drips goes, i dedicate Woroni to that. It’s free and the paper is quite absorbent.

What is this thing of which you speak? The ‘Canberra Times’?

The CT has gone from a paper with pretensions to being a serious journal to a tabloid in all but format. The rot set in when it was bought by the Rural Press and fired all their best journalists.

It’s no more than the local rag these days. What a shame.

It’s best not to buy the Canberra Times as it is rubbish. If you must read it, scam a look at a free copy in a coffee shop or the hairdressers. Buying it only encourages them.

Must admit Evan I really miss those low cost, big sheets of paper for catching paint, paper mache and cleaning windows, mirrors etc (thanks for nothing you bastard offset printers).

If they still employ journos, they must live in Sydney or re-hash internet stuff as they have no clue about what’s happening on the streets of Canberra.

According to the RBA’s inflation calculator, an item that cost $1.10 in 2000 is worth $1.48 in 2010 dollars.[*]

So rather than increasing the cost on you, the real price of the Canberra Times may have been too low over the past decade and has only just corrected itself. 🙂
