Sticky date pudding anyone? Or if mains are more your thing, how about a burger, or entering a meat raffle? These are just a few of the delicious dishes Canberrans can enjoy in support of local patients, their families and healthcare teams, the next time they visit Canberra Southern Cross Club.
The club is in a race against its peers to see which group can raise the most funds before 26 September. For club-goers, this means plenty of promotions and other activations to get involved in.
ClubsACT and Canberra Hospital Foundation proudly announced a year-long partnership in late 2023, raising much-needed funds for specialised equipment, important research, therapeutic programs, and refurbishment of away-from-bed spaces for patients and their families.
As part of the partnership, local clubs are encouraged to raise at least $10,000 before Canberra Hospital Foundation’s annual Can Give Day in spring.
The club with the highest total will take out the Top Fundraiser and Community Support Award at the ClubsACT awards later this year.
Canberra Southern Cross Club kicked things off in Jamison earlier this year, dedicating all proceeds from its weekly meat raffle to the cause.
Eateries in Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison have entered the ClubsACT Best Burger Competition with ‘The Schnitty Butty’, a premium chicken breast schnitzel burger with short cut bacon, thick cut chips, mixed salad leaves and sweet chilli aioli. Two dollars from every sale will be added to the pot for Canberra Hospital Foundation.
In August, each venue will be serving delicious, house-made sticky date puddings – $1 from each of these late winter comfort desserts will be donated. Henry’s Woden has a craft session planned for the kids which will dedicate all proceeds to the cause.
Donation tins can also be found in every Canberra Southern Cross Club venue.
Matt Walshe started working with Canberra Southern Cross Club three decades ago, working his way up from cleaning glasses and clearing the floor to his most recent role as CEO. He’s beyond proud of the work his club is doing to support local charities.
“We aren’t an RSL or sporting club, we are a community club at our core and that means community comes first in everything we do,” Matt says.
“We contribute $1.4 million annually in support of over 350 local groups. That’s quite the achievement, but we can always do more, so it was a no-brainer to enter into this competition.”
If the club manages to hit the lofty $10,000 milestone by September, Matt will also gain entry into Canberra Hospital Foundation’s 2024 Big Wig Challenge, which will see leaders from across the nation’s capital don daring hairdos for daring feats.
“The Big Wig Challenge is always a spectacle,” Matt says.
“I think there are plenty of staff who would love to see me abseil off a building, so that’s definitely the goal. But really, we just want to raise as much as we possibly can for local patients, their families and healthcare teams throughout Canberra.”
Show your support for Canberra Southern Cross Club’s campaign in the Compete for OUR HEART challenge here. When Can Give Day rolls around in September, pooled funds will be donated directly to the Canberra Hospital Foundation.
