The Bureau of Statistics has released new data showing the ACT leads the country for meeting physical activity guidelines.

So next time you hear “real australians” whining; tell them to put the donut down and go ride a bicycle.

If this is the case, then why are so many Canberrans so overweight. I mean, you walk through Belconnen Mall and boy….

Perhaps you should get out in the open more often.

I’ve been to almost every city in Australia, but am always struck by the larger than average size of the Canberran population.

Clearly you have never been to Redbank Plaza in Ipswich.

. . . or Woolworths in Quangers.

So, if I read that graph correctly, we’re the best in Australia but barely average 40% of what is required?

Not quite. We’re the best in Australia because only 40% of us are managing to achieve the levels of physical activity required to obtain a health benefit. These are:

1 Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience
2 Be active every day in as many ways as you can
3 Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, day.

In other jurisdictions, fewer than 40% of the adult population is doing this.
