Canberrans in Qatar

With the recent news confirming that australia will host the 2015 edition of the asian cup, asia’s premier and largest sporting event (and let’s hope the nation’s capital is blessed with being a venue – asian cup guidelines stipulate that a host use only five venues; canberra is on the shortlist but nothing has been determined beyond the opening and closing fixtures being held in sydney and melbourne), spare a thought for two, yes two, canberrans braving the heat of qatar to participate in the current tournament…

Two, you ask? i know Carl Valeri is from canberra (the enthusiasts respond), but who else in the squad is from here?

Well, he’s not in the squad (huh? you continue…) and has already participated in a game, officiating in the middle of china’s 2-0 reverse over kuwait – ahhh, now i see…

Ben Williams is a local hawker lad and big up to him for a good tournament (but let’s hope he is disqualified from refereeing the final due to australia’s participation therein, with carl knocking in the 89th minute winner over south korea!)

go aussies!

Both hail from Tuggeranong by the way. A bit disappointed Carl didn’t get a run last night but hopefully they just didn’t want to waste him against India. Ben’s had a tough run in Asian matches so far, the Malaysian coach said he needs to see a mental doctor a few months ago after he sent three of the team off, and the other night the Kuwait coach said he was so bad he should be investigated. He’s actually not a bad ref, he’s just a bit used to sending people off here in Canberra for swearing when they make a mistake.
