The Beast is all a-twitter about an unpublished (at least online) Clean Up Australia Day Committee report saying Canberra has the most littered parks in Australia (possibly due to lack of maintenance, possibly because we’re filthy pigs).

But Territory And Municipal Services are focussing on the positives:

“We’re encouraging all Canberrans to do their bit on Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March 2011 to help preserve Canberra’s bush capital status,” Mr Byles said. “This annual event is the perfect opportunity for us all to come together to help clean up our local parks and waterways, like Lake Tuggeranong, and to think about how we can reduce our impact on the environment.

“Clean Up Australia Day is an ideal time to make positive changes to our behaviour and attitudes to waste. The findings of the Rubbish Report show that despite many positive changes in our behaviour and attitudes to waste, improvements in waste reduction and avoidance is still necessary.

Down the page they also slip in a major announcement:

“From next Wednesday the ACT Government will introduce new laws related to the use and misuse of shopping trolleys. From 2 March 2011 it will become an offence in the ACT to remove a trolley from a shopping centre or to use a trolley outside a shopping centre precinct. The introduction of this new law aims to reduce the number of shopping trolleys that go missing and that litter the ACT.
