Coffee in Dunlop/Charnwood area?

Anyone have any favourite places to hang out and have a cuppa in Charnwood area?

Only place I’ve been able to find is McDonald’s and I’ve decided one of my new year’s resolutions will be not to buy anything from them this year in protest of the horrendous service. They don’t seen to care about anything other than their drive through and customers can wait 15mins before being served if there’s more than two orders at once. Having done that job as a youngster myself, albeit in the US, I just stand there in awe as they ignore customers.

So, do I have to plan my trips to Civic now or is there a place I haven’t thought of that would actually like to sell me their coffee rather than ignore me?

Maybe Jamison or Kippax?

I’m surprised that some people have recommended the coffee available in Kippax – my experience is that the coffee is truly awful. The location is not great either – you’re stuck inside in a noisy thoroughfare. I go to Ricardo’s at Jamison regularly – usually weekly – and you can sit outside (shaded or open air) and the coffee is good. I also prefer the shops and parking at Jammo to Kippax.

I have my suspicions that the old Kippax Tavern site is slated to become a pile of sardine cans apartments.

I heard that Hungry Jacks is going to built at the old Kippax Tavern site. Can someone confirm this?

I was in a small business at Kippax yesterday afternoon, and they seemed to think that McDonalds was interested in a store at the ol’ Kippax Tavern site. Smallish Maccas with a drive through. The business in question, not being the sort of place to get a lot of walk in customers, nor selling food, were not really worried about any impact other then on parking, but it got me interested enough to try and google it.

Get some instant coffee from Aldi – that stuff is like liquid gold.

Urban Roast in Belconnen (used to be Hansel and Gretel)

They are across from the police station and do wonderful coffe and great food and you always get good service because it is owner/operator.

Been going there for about 12 months now and would recommend it to be the best place in the Belconnen town centre.

Movement commenced prior to Christmas – the land was cleared – but that’s it probably until they all return to work next week….

A KFC was mooted for the site next to Charnwood Macca’s as long as 6 or 7 years ago when the block was first fenced off and a shipping container placed on the site. Since then nothing has happened. It has been a while since I’ve been out that way, but are these posts saying that construction of something has actually started on the site, or is it the same, just a fenced off block of land?

Chop – It’s not Kingley’s.. Infact, I had even temporarily forgotten they existed.

Quote “I know nothing of KFC going to Charnwood *shrugs*, but I do know (on very good authority) that a certain other chicken place will be going there in the near future.”

Seems to be a strangle business decision if it is K****slys considering Charnwood as they have a store in Kippax. KFC would make more sense considering their nearest store is Hawker. Oh well, Seems people have been eating their crap all over Canberra for years so good luck to them.

Apologies Ladyofthelake – Mustn’t have had page scrolled properly when I re-read the post and missed the bottom line. Still, the rest of my comment stands, if you’re gonna go that far, why not go all the way. There’s plenty to choose from at the mall, taking up all the traffic zones from one end to the other….

+1 Guru @ Jamison. Never had a bad cuppa there (almost weekly). If you have kiddies, takeaway and the playground on the south of the building is a great option too… I highly recommend the Coles there for shopping, too. Jamo beats Kippax any day (and both beat Charny shops).

There are plenty of reasons to give any mcdonalds a wide berth, you must have pretty useless tastebuds to draw the line at service.

As for Coffee Guru, I’ve given them plenty of last chances and they haven’t once, not once at all, served me a decent coffee. In saying that I haven’t been to the one at jamieson but I won’t be trying it courtesy of the brand’s reputation. Yay franchises!

I hear the coffee at the takeaway is to die for.

Oh no! I just got a flash of the future, trendy boganista’s drinking laaaahtayz in the Chunlop CBD.

Gungahlin Maccas is the same at practically ignoring walk-in customers. I think it is actually a policy of Maccas to serve drive-though in Xminutes or they have to give them a free burger.

“Would you like fries with your whine?”

Why yes, I would. But good luck getting them at Charny McDonald’s without a long wait. And even then they will probably give you something else by mistake.

Seriously, go get a cuppa there some day and just sit down and watch. You’ll be amazed at how many times they ask every customer to repeat their order, how disorganised they are and how many customers (both from the drive up and the front counter) come back to complain about their order. Most of the time one person will be at the front counter taking orders and putting them together by themselves no matter how long the queue becomes.

The management there clearly need to lift their game.

KFC, oh no – anything else to go with it or just a big KFC?

@wildturkeycanoe

Maybe you should read the OP again. She mentions Kippax and Jamison

wildturkeycanoe12:33 pm 02 Jan 11

Ladyofthelake – the OP was asking about west Belco, if they’d wanted to go as far as Jamison, might as well go to Westfield..Duh!
Chop71 – that block next to Maccas is going to be a KFC, not helping to improve the area much is it?

There’s also a small place at the Holt shops that does coffee, I think they’re only open during the week though

Thanks. Hadn’t noticed the Coffee Bean in Florey and I do stop there from time to time as I like the IGA there. One of the few places that stocks Red Eye (prefer it over Red Bull) and the service is top notch with friendly staff.

Correction: Facet junior who lives in lower west Charnwood has advised that the beverage of choice is International Roast with a slug of Jim Beam.
I also have a good recipe for tea.

“McDonald’s . . . I’ve decided one of my new year’s resolutions will be not to buy anything from them this year in protest of the horrendous service.”

In protest at their service? Why not their alleged “food”? When I returned to fitness training and bodybuilding I blackbanned Maccas and my 2009 new year resolution still hasn’t been broken.

there is a Coffee Guru at the Jamison Centre… mmm coffee!

One heaped spoonful of Moccona Classic Medium Roast coffee, Carnation Light and Creamy (97% less fat) evaporated milk and hot water (sugar or sweetener to taste).
If you complain about the service then you have a fool for a customer.

As Dunlop grows and grows without local shops, You would expect Charnwood shopping centre to improve significantly. Maybe this would explain the new shop fit outs, improved security cameras and what are they building on the block next to Maccas? (I always thought that would be good for a coffee shop)

-1 to the place at the bottom of Kippax. I’ve always found the service to be pretty poor. Not a particularly appealling setting either.

Jammo has some decent coffee shops.

Kippax has a couple of coffee shops, both make good coffee. Not the best atmosphere though. Both are down near the chemist shop.

The Coffee Bean at Florey shops…..beautiful cuppa and really nice couches and newspapers and magazines to just take time out..

Also the food is very nice with homemade cakes….

It is opposite Dominos pizza in the new building.

The place at the bottom of Kippax does good coffee, and their service is good too. And if you shop at woolies, the one at Kippax has a much better range of products, but probably only 2 check-out chicks serving.
