Cotter Avenue to re-open this Saturday

By johnboy - 29 August 2012 6

Actew are letting everyone know the revamped and previously much loved Cotter Avenue is opening to the public again:

With the Cotter Dam as the backdrop, join ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and ACTEW Water from 9.30am on Saturday 1 September to officially open the Avenue. Then be one of the first to walk over the new Cotter foot bridge and up to the Cotter Dam Discovery Trail.

Enjoy a sausage sizzle, coffee, live music, face painting and activities available on the day or simply take advantage of the updated barbecue facilities and bring along your own picnic.

ACT Parks and Conservation Service Rangers will run hourly guided tours of the surrounding area, with ACTEW Water staff on-hand to answer questions about the Cotter Dam.

A pretty good way to start Spring.

Agree with c_c … it’s self-evident that no-one should be doing much more than walking speed there anyway. The road’s just fine. It’s a great spot.

Time to re-open this oldish thread. Went down there today with the family just to get out of the house and away from rental across the road playing doof-doof music 24×7 and was gobsmacked at just how badly designed the avenue is.

They seem to have narrowed the road and carparking spots by about 2 meters a side and the result is very narrow and extremely dangerous. Before the redesign, even when the place was full, there was enough space to manoeuvre two cars up and down the road safely. That’s the case no more. We have a small car and still had to swing in and out to avoid parked cars and oncoming traffic. There has always been a danger of little kids running out on the road there and now it’s *much* worse. Before you had a bit of space and thus time to see and stop. Now, it’s so narrow and blind that even just crawling through kids will appear from behind cars before you can react.

I’m afraid it has spoiled what was a great area and due to it being so narrow and dangerous we won’t be going back. Thanks so much ACT Government for another screwup.

Do us all a favour and get off the road then.

Seriously I drove down there a month ago and the Avenue seemed as wide as it has always been, certainly wide enough that a bulky 4×4 could drive in the opposite direction to me with plenty of space to spare. And certainly if is thinner, it is not so much thinner that you have an appreciable decline in the response time to a child running out. You should be driving slowly anyway.

Sorry. Its ACT government policy that dogs are not allowed. Hope you can still come.

Are dogs (on leash) allowed?

Should be a great day. Wind will abate and looks like a bit of sun for the first day of spring. Plenty of carparking and even a bus from Cotter campgrounds to the Avenue. The Avenue looks fantastic. Toilets work, bbq’s work, playground all spick and span, new bridge completes the Discovery Trail walk, and lots of grass for ball games. I will be around all morning to answer those tough water questions Riot-Actors always have, in between sausage sambos. Work will be happening on the dam 63metres up which is a good thing in itself. Starts at 9.30, speeches and opening about 10 and then a fun day thru till about 3pm. Be there.
