Dio: A Tribute

As I’m many of you may have heard, Ronnie James Dio recently passed away.

Dio performed with, amongst others, Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio, over a period of 5 decades. Known for his distinctive, fantasy-themed lyrics and powerfully operatic voice, Dio was universally recognised as one of the most influential figures in the history of heavy metal: the grandfather of heavy metal. He’s also credited with popularizing the devil horns hand gesture in rock music.

In order to honour the life and work of Ronnie James Dio, Canberra band Live Evil are performing two shows in honour of the little big man:

  • Sat 24th July – PJ O’Reilly’s, Tuggeranong – (pre-sales tickets for this show are available from both PJ’s and Better Music)
  • Friday 6th August – The Basement, Belconnen (no pre-sales tickets, once the venue has hit capacity, no more punters will be allowed inside)

I hope that you’ll come along and enjoy a night of nostalgia and the very best of classic heavy metal.

Will they be singing Love Is All? If so, I’m there.

Yes.

For those of us old enough to have fond memories of the singing frog from back in the day (love is all … love is all): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oADfmYQWmW8

Serious? You guys must be awesome to pull that off.

Next you’ll be doing Mike Oldfield’s Incantations Part 4, which was my fave ABC “fill in” video clip of that era.

Thanks Jim, I may take you up on that, and be yet another “old bastard” proping up the bar at the back and complaining that; “augmented fourths were far heavier in my day.”

Hells_Bells74, I have a “not entirely legitimate” copy of BB somehwere.

I remember the Butterfly Ball song and clip very well and have vague memories of seeing the movie. I wish I could remember if I liked it, I adored the song.

Wow, I never knew he sung it. Always learning stuff hangin’ round here

🙂

So damn lucky I got to see him perform with Sabbath one last time when Heaven and Hell toured.

Good on you guys for putting together a tribute. I really hope I can get there.

Oh now there’s a memory! “Love is all!” Dear god, wasn’t THAT out of character, (though wonderfully sung.)

Has anyone else seen the “Butterfly Ball Movie”? It was so dreadful that Rodger Glover washed his hands of it.

And PB – you gotta come out to some gigs. I’m sure you’ll dig it (and find that there are generally a few oldies at the bar enjoying themselves).

*Before I damn my son to Hell, he actually with no help from me has gone with God. Only the Lord knows why.

Maybe he needs a good dose of Catholic school hehe.

‘Heaven and Hell’ is one of my fave albums of all time, definitely in the top 10.

We may not always agree on everything Jim, but I totally agree.

My son’s bassinet used to sit near my stereo in the lounge and he wouldn’t settle if I didn’t have that album playing (the louder the better). Not that I minded one bit, could hear it a million times, easy (oh he didn’t mind Bat out of Hell either).

Sounds like a good night.

RIP RJD

I rarely go to gigs these days Jim. It takes a big band to get me to put out my pipe, change out of my slippers, and get out of my rocking chair.

Seeing Bill Bailey at the end of the month if that’s any good, must get my hearing aid fixed….

I’d put it in my top ten metal albums Jim, it may make my top 100 albums.

Nice idea the tribute, best of luck with it. But having seen Dio with Elf supporting Rainbow, then with Rainbow, and then with the Sabs, then Dio, I don’t think a “tribute” could be in the same league to be honest.

I know what you’re saying, but gotta say that it’s a pretty poor excuse not to go to a gig. I’ve seen any number of insanely good, world-class bands – this doesn’t prevent me from checking out (and enjoying) local bands on a regular basis.

It really spun me out when I found out that he sung the Butterfly Ball song.
