Just a sad run down of what my weekend will involve.

NPL (National Poker League for those not in the know) are having a Preditor tourney at the Tigers Club in Queanbeyan. $15 buy-in. Rego from 6pm. See their website for more info.

Scotland v France – Rugby World Cup.
Tickets are nice and cheap, I think everything kicks off about 530pm and after the game they will be showing the opening ceremony and Australia game on the big screen.

Luca’s home-made pizza and cocktail nights at Il Covo on Allara Street in the city on Thursday and Friday nights. Might organise a group for one Thursday night when there’s nothing else on. Hmm. How’s 2010 for everyone?

Thanks for the heads-up about the RowDayOh, skaboy. Might make coming back from the coast a bit of an adventure.

Sunday is the Bungendore Rodeo. Google it for more info.

Monday is Pink Ribbon Day and there will be various events taking place around and about. For starters, go to — I said elsewhere that I’d be in the Canberra Centre for four hours tomorrow, but I’ve been relieved for two of those, so I’ll be down between Ghetto and OPSM selling pink stuff from 1pm to 3pm.

[I was going to make some flippant comment about that being cool because I’ve been working my [blank] off lately, but I have declared October the ‘International Month of People Taking Great Offence at Random Comments Overheard Makes’ so best to leave it alone!]

johnboy 3:08 pm 23 Oct 08

Hancock Basement and Haunted Attics supporting Skipping Girl Vinegar at the ANU Bar on Saturday night!

The Gathering 2 – Sideproject celebrates it’s 5th Birthday and 5 years of ‘doof doof’ music.

Sideproject has always liked to celebrate birthday’s in style and this event is no exception.

PSYBORIGINAL (2 hours live)

Psyboriginal is Marc Freund from Sydney, Australia Since 2004, his live sets have focused on spawning an environment conducive for explosive, energetic, and sometimes unpredictable trancefloor reverberations. The Psybo-sound depicts that indescribable moment between night and day -ethereal and uplifting to bring in the morning, yet mysterious and menacing enough to wreck nocturnal havoc. Marc’s versitility as an artist is further evident in the incorporation of guitar and vocals in a few of his tracks.

Close? (DJ) – Close? is a experienced and versatile artist and one of Canberra’ leading producers. Things have been on the up for Close? recently with a steady stream of music coming out of the studio and an increasing number of gigs. We look forward to hearing a chill set from him.

Ugly Bunyip (DJ) – It’s probably fair to say that Regrowth 2007 was a life changing experience for Ugly Bunyip. Since then he has been involved in all aspects of psy culture in this region, including learning how to mix tunes. We welcome Ugly Bunyip to 5th Birthday for what promises to be a smooth set of progressive psychedelic music.

Freebass Toad (DJ) – Freebass Toad has played some quality sets in recent times at a number of different events around the Canberra region. Expect a set of emotional progressive music with an Aussie producer focus. Signed, sealed and delivered on the laptop.

Psyentology (DJ) – Chris and Tom from Psyentology have been working hard in recent times becoming masters at the art of starting a party. They possess a diverse range of psy trance, ranging from uplifting melodic, to deeper and darker, to chunky and funky. Expect to get moving when these two hit the decks.

Tarik (DJ) – Anyone who spends an average of 15 hours a day mixing is likely to become pretty good at, you know, mixing. This is the case with Tarik, who probably actually spends around 15 hours a day mixing. Come and hear the man they call T-Unit rip apart the Mercury Bar with another hour of peak time psytrance.

Alamout (DJ) – After rocking the main stage at Dragon Dreaming Festival, we welcome back the Canberra master of the dark for what is sure to result in complete dancefloor destruction. With years of experience and vast quantities of awesome tunes, we know from experience what to expect from this man.

Artwork: Tom

Sound: Crystal clear sound by PA Sime

Lighting: Big Show by Toby, Azza and Dave. Starting off ambient, and rising in intensity – aligned with the music to take you on a powerful psychedelic journey. Spiritual atmosphere created through candles and incense.

Decor: Sideproject crew

Extras: Free chupa chups, glowstix, and fruit to keep your energy and spirits up.

Cost: $20 on the door. Start 8pm.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we reach capacity this time so arrive early to avoid disappointment. Hope to see you there.

And STILL I forget to mention the important stuff! Trivia in the Trams at the Tra dies Club, Dickson. Monday night from 7pm. Free entry, cash prizes, voucher prizes, games, fun, ritual good-natured abuse, total absence of the crow-call word (faaaark!) and it’s all done and dusted by 9.15pm. 9.20pm at a stretch.

Looking to join a Riot(ACT)? Look for the jet black hair of Granny somewhere near the card table up the front, maybe the return of Aurelius and Locquaciousness (?) and hopefully the rather cool chick possibly sporting a headband (Shannski). All that’s missing is U!

If you’re up for a drive, the unmissable Martin Pearson tonight at the Braidwood Folk Club from 7.30pm. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll laugh crying, you’ll cry laughing. One of Australia’s best-kept entertainment secrets.

Friday: Jigzag plus PJ Wolf at the Merry Muse, Turner. Hear Jigzag with me on Artsound FM from 5pm Friday (if they are available). Free tix to go off to allcomers.

Saturday: Martin Pearson plus Daniel Champagne at the Folkus Room, Mawson. See above about Martin. Daniel Champagne does things with a guitar that you need to see to believe. You can hear him on Artsound FM with me at about 6.10pm Friday. Plus free tix (I think — waiting to hear back from Big Bill A.)

Saturday/Sunday: see the ‘Civic is boring’ thread for more details about something at Durras if you’re up for it.

Sunday: I’m presenting Folk on Sunday between 7-8pm and my special guest is Sanjiva Da Silva. If you missed ‘The Band Broke Up’ on Tuesday night, you can at least tune in and have a listen.
