Does your home smell like your pets?

Pets Stains Canberra

In the cold Canberra winter, it can feel unconscionable to send your pets outside to sleep. Looking at their cute little faces as they sit shivering in the doorway, it just seems easier (and kinder) to say, “Ah heck … come on in. Sleep on the couch. Or better yet, the kids’ beds!”

But then one night turns into two … then three … and before you know it, your pets have the run of your house; which isn’t really a problem, except for the smell. And over time the smell permeates your rooms, carpets, rugs, lounges, and even your clothes.

It’s especially pungent when they have little accidents around the house. Just like toilet training toddlers, some dogs and cats are prone to urine dribbles, which they leave throughout the carpet and over the upholstery. As well as stinking out the house, it can actually be quite dangerous to your family’s health.

So what do you do about it? How do you get rid of the smell, and the urine stains and any possible contamination?

Brett Walmsley, who runs Scrubbers Carpet Cleaning and Pet Stains Canberra, says “Whatever you do, don’t call someone and ask them to come and steam clean the carpets! Steam cleaning carpets before treating urine contamination actually causes the urine to spread.

If a urine stain has just occurred, treat it the same way you would a wine or vomit stain: pour a cup of water onto it. Don’t drench the carpet, but the water will neutralise the acid. Then you can use paper towels to draw out the stain and moisture.”

Brett says that you can call a carpet cleaner, but you will want to explain the situation with your pets and warn them about the possibility of other urine stains throughout the house.

“Treating pet stains and odour isn’t the same as general carpet cleaning. For example, we use special technology to help us find all of the contamination throughout the house. There is a lot you can’t actually see.

Once we find and treat all the contaminated areas, we can then move to steam cleaning and deodorising with eco-friendly and pet-safe solutions, which remove that lingering pet smell from your home.”

And apparently, if the women in the house are holding their noses – the men should take notice! Studies have shown that women have almost 50% more neurons in their olfactory centres (the part of the brain dedicated to smelling and odours) than men.

“Don’t ignore them,” laughs Brett. “They can smell a whole lot better than we can. If your wife says the house stinks like the dog, she’s almost certainly right!”

Hi @Masquara, our tech and design people are working on a fix for this.

Can you please put “advertising feature” at the top of this sort of sponsored content rather than tucked away at the end?
