Changes to the bin pick up scheduled means Canberrans hoping to have their Christmas Day rubbish quickly cleared will have to wait a little longer.
Bin collections that normally would have been picked up on Monday – which is Christmas Day this year – will now have their garbage taken away on Saturday, 23 December.
There are 25 impacted suburbs, which are: Belconnen, Chapman, Chifley, Coombs, Curtin, Denman Prospect, Duffy, Farrer, Fisher, Holder, Kambah, Lyons, Mawson, Molonglo, Pearce, Phillip, Rivett, Stirling, Torrens, Uriarra Village, Waramanga, Weston, Whitlam, Wright and Yarralumla.
All other collections will occur as per the current schedule.
The Mugga Lane and Mitchell Resource Management Centres will be closed on Christmas Day, 25 December.
If you just can’t wait or have a mountain of wrapping paper spilling out of the house, the Recycling Drop Off Centres in Belconnen, Mitchell, Gungahlin, Phillip and Tuggeranong will be open on Christmas Day.
In fact, they’re open 24 hours, seven days a week.
These facilities accept steel and aluminium cans, paper, cardboard and rigid plastic containers.
Canberrans have been reminded not to put hazardous waste like batteries and gas bottles into their general bin waste.
They can cause fires – in fact, batteries were behind the 2022 Boxing Day fire at the Hume recycling centre.
The Recyclopaedia has all the information you need about where to dispose of batteries, gas bottles and a range of other common items.
