Does anyone know why there are so many shops available for lease in Civic?

Ahhh Melbourne. Fitzroy is a great example of how lots of smaller, older buildings can be an advantage in developing a community with great atmosphere and a thriving retail economy.

QIC. Ultra evil.

If the council or the chiefly one had any balls perhaps they’d consider putting a legislative holt on the gross floor area of retail owned by any outfit (including subsidiaries and group structures etc, to get around people playing silly buggers). Once the bastards demolish the buildings on the other side of Bunda St the eastern side of Civic will be completely farked. At which point I predict a revival of sorts on the other side of Northborne. Or perhaps more of my mates will flee to Melbourne…

Too much shop space, not enough shoppers. I often wonder how some of these businesses survive. I was at Brand Depot last weekend and it was like a ghost town.

It’s a shame that Garema Place has lost it’s vibe.

Commercial vacancy rates in Canberra are at an eleven year high, but landlords in the city are generally not willing to reduce rent or allow shorter lease terms. This means that in a struggling retail economy, new businesses cannot find suitable space to start up, and established businesses are less inclined to renew their lease when there are cheaper rents out in the suburbs.

I disagree. Mambo Jesus would understand, and forgive, the all too human urge to participate in Hallowe’en. Sweet Zombie Jesus, on the other hand…

Don’t forget Raptor Jesus

Creative Canberran I was in the hyperdome last weekend and I couldn’t see any shops waiting to be leased.

What we need is more women’s clothing shops. There aren’t nearly enough of them. I don’t know how women find anything to wear.

The Canberra Centre has expanded, meanwhile the economy has tanked. It’s a tough time for business, particularly when those in other parts of Civic rely on the foot traffic now making a beeline for the mega mall.

Businesses are closing all over Canberra, with a particular emphasis on Tuggeranong at the moment.

Civic needs outdoor shops (non-mall style) if it is ever going to have any vibrancy.

We drove through last weekend, and the quietest areas were the mega tall office buildings. so just building sky scrapers is not going to turn Civic into a Sydney or Melbourne type city centre.

All of these new office towers should have to have shops as the first floor, which might encourage a bit of life around the place.

Norman Abjorensen most likely advised them to breath some new life into the city centre…

Empty shops are generally the result of the business that once owned them closing.

The unstoppable juggernaut that is the Canberra Centre is chewing up or absorbing any retailers within sight. QIC take care of the stragglers with a quick one-two punch to the hip pocket.

And then there will be even more empty office space in Canberra.

QIC owns a great number of them and has raised rents until the owners go elsewhere. The canberra centre west is also responsible for creating competition that drives some shops elsewhere.

Ever since the Canberra Centre expansion, Garema Place has taken a dive.
