The crimson hues painting the sky as the sun goes down and the stars start shining provides a perfect setting to catch up with friends and family, or take someone on a date, as Sunset Cinema returns to Canberra for its eighth year at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

This year, the film program has something for everyone. For the first time, two Netflix movies will be screened: star-studded musical The Prom – on opening night on Thursday, 10 December – and George Clooney’s space adventure, The Midnight Sky, screening on Friday, 11 December.

Timeless classics Love Actually and Home Alone will also be screened – on Wednesday, 16 December, and Wednesday, 23 December, respectively – to celebrate the spirit of the Christmas season.

Sunset Cinema will also keep kids entertained during the school holidays, where they can step into the world of an orphaned girl who discovers a hidden magical garden at her uncle’s estate in The Secret Garden (Saturday, 2 January) or watch the animated Trolls World Tour (Saturday, 12 December).

Take a picnic basket or enjoy a movie with fresh popcorn available from the onsite food vendors. Drinks are available from the licensed bar after gates open at 6:30 pm. Patrons can download an app and order directly from one of the food vendors and collect it once it’s ready.

Charlie Rose, marketing and partnership executive at Sunset Cinema, says they are happy to be back in Canberra this season.

“We have a special [COVID-19] exemption from the government and put in every effort in place to make sure everyone is safe,” she says.

“We are excited to be organising an event for people to get out and socialise with their family and friends again. It’s all about enjoying our beautiful Australian summer this year and we’re looking forward to bringing an outdoor experience for everyone.”

COVID-19 safety measures in place include hygiene marshals onsite helping people to enter and exit, ensuring 1.5m social distancing at the venue, and thorough cleaning of the premises.

During the Sunset Cinema season, screenings take place on Wednesday to Saturday each week. The season runs from 10 December until 14 February.

A new program will be released each month. Look out for Valentines week of movies! Whether you’re a true romantic or prefer something a little different there’s plenty to choose from. Laugh along with everyone’s favourite hopeless-in-love heroine Bridget Jones or check out the all-star cast in Wild Mountain Thyme. If your epic love has always been film, don’t miss out on the 40th anniversary remastered edition of Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back.
