If history is written by the victors, where does that leave those who were never allowed to be part of the game?
In the Athens Olympic Stadium, a collective of queer athletes set out to honour those excluded from a place on the winners’ podium. The subjects of this hybrid documentary include Amanda Reiter, a trans marathon runner up against the prejudices of sports organisers, and Annet Negesa, an 800-metre runner urged by international sports federations to undergo hormone-altering surgery.
Created by a crew comprising women and queer people only, Life Is Not a Competition, But I’m Winning presents a radical vision of queer community that celebrates strength and unity.
‘…a lively, eye-opening work celebrating women, black and queer athletes who have triumphed against considerable odds’ – Screen Daily
