Everybody does the wrong thing on the road

By Barcham 13 November 2013 39

One for both teams today!

These popped up on YouTube yesterday, both uploaded by the same user beerwah rigseismic.

Here’s a cyclist doing the wrong thing:

they like to be treated as equals on the road but this guy has his own ‘special’ rules.

And here’s a driver:

Long Gully Road, Canberra
Suburu with 5 occupants and double yellow lines, car is registered in NSW

Lots of cyclists think the ‘rules’ don’t apply to them – and they switch between pedestrian and road rules when it suits. They simply don’t WANT to dismount, slow down, or stop like everyone else.

This has always been one of my points and why I fire up.

Pedestrians, riders and drivers all break the law but people carry on at cyclist like they are the antichrist. EVERYBODY DOES IT PEOPLE!!!!!

Maybe I should take videos of all the jaywalkers on Northbourne Ave every day, especially at Aling St.

By all means please do. I would be interested to see how many of these jaywalkers have cameras mounted on their head, ever ready to catch out an offending motorist.

The only thread that comes to mind that a cyclist has posted a video on this site was the Jim’s Mowing thread.

There have been numerous threads on RA where drivers have posted this stuff, more than cyclists.

I don’t use one and don’t intend to, all the people I ride with that have one use it to record the good times when they are MTBing.

So, you can take your snide, cyclist hating insinuations elsewhere.

Funny enough I don’t have one when I hop on the treadly. So please, let’s not automatically circle the wagons – or the bikes for that matter – every time we discuss this subject.

The problem with an unbroken line heading downhill (east)

That should read “broken” line.

I’m a bit surprised that isn’t one-side unbroken lines on that stretch of Long Gully. I’ve seen unbroken lines used in far less logical locations.

The problem with an unbroken line heading downhill (east) is that inexperienced or unskilled drivers will overtake while a line of oncoming cars are still present in their left lane heading up the hill. If one of those cars chooses to pull out into their uphill overtaking lane a very serious headon crash will occur.

FFS even heavy vehicles travel at an acceptable pace down that hill. There is an absolutely zero need for any overtaking and hence a zero need for a broken line.

Interesting to see that the Holdfast Bay (Glenelg SA) Council is pushing (pardon the pun) for speeding cyclists to be fined by police for exceeding 10km/h on shared paths. What do ACT pedalphiles think about that for an idea?

That would be the beachfront paths that get quite busy, Glenelg being Adelaide’s beachside playground, the equivalent Canberra paths would be Civic Walk or inside the larger malls – I’d accept a 10 limit inside the Canberra Centre !

I think if you put this one out there you should share your opinion on the issue.

I find it interesting that there are groups in the uk pushing the “20’s plenty” campaign. Also there is a making streets livable campaign in Europe pushing for 30 km/h.

I’m all for it!

Fair enough, I shall admit I prefer my bikes to have a 1000cc motor and these usually are not too popular on shared paths. I can honestly say…that I have probably broken every road rule in every state in the country, not something I do so much of these days.
On bicycle speed limits on shared paths?…Police don’t seem to be bothered enforcing current helmet regulations so I don’t see why they would be bothered policing any possible bicycle speed limit.

Quite happy so long as podophiles are fined for walking at less than 10 km/h.

I wish that all cyclists would safely cross like this guy did, after stopping. I certainly prefer them safely out of the way when I want to turn left.

These are really lame videos, just like most of the Monday parking pics.

Let’s face it, we are all going to park badly/illegally from time to time when we’re in a hurry. I got stuck in the disabled park at the Griffith shops a week ago when my car broke down and I had to pull in somewhere safe and out of traffic to await the NRMA.

RiotACT should be about revolution, not boring conformity and dobbing in our neighbours.*

*I may or may not expect to see my car in Monday parking every week….

I hope the person posting the vids has better colour recognition at traffic lights, those double yellow lines look mighty white to me.

What an exciting life this person leads!

Yes, perhaps they could also film people taking 9 items through the 8 items or less at the supermarket? Would be equally thrilling to watch.

PS. If you’re wasting your life capturing and uploading this stuff then you could at least edit it down the relevant 3 seconds.

Under rated post.

Dash cams are the worst. You’re innocuous rubbish that we all see on the roads multiple times a day isn’t more interesting cos you have too much money and a youtube account.

Yeah, I know many road users tend to flout the road rules, regardless of their chosen mode of transport. I just can’t see how that has anything to do with disproving the theory that all cyclists are the antichrist!

Hahahaha

“they like to be treated as equals on the road but this guy has his own ‘special’ rules.”

That’s because he’s a better person than the rest of us.

Robertson 2:53 pm 13 Nov 13

Looked like a safe overtake to me.

Double yellow lines, speed limits, these things are fairly arbitrary. In fact, I seem to recall years ago that the line was a broken one for traffic headed downhill.
As for the 70 on Mugga Lane, well, if it was the similar stretch of road between Binalong and Bowning, you’d expect it to be 100. 70 is just silly. Still, there are 3 places where you should slow down a bit on that road once you’re past the tip:
– at the Barrys driveway
– at the quarry
– at the two driveways right on the bend.
Additionally, if you don’t have a bullbar, it’s probably worth driving in a fairly restrained way along there. Still, I have been know to overtake people pootling on at about 60-70 on Mugga Lane. There is a limit.
