Farmers Markets extending their opening hours

I was interested to see what the difference in hours would do to the markets and was happy to see that there was no difference at all. A few grumbling stall holders who claimed there was no consultation from the organisers regarding the new hours that 10% of customers surveyed asked for. Everything good sold out by 9am and then when i dropped back past after the sports drop off, around 11.15, a whole stack of bored farmers standing around chatting while they waited to be let out. There were very few customers actually buying anything but that could have something to do with the quality of product still available.
The general consensus seemed to be that the stallholders with the good product don’t need and don’t really want the extra hours as they sell out anyway. Buyt i guess it gives all the other guys a chance to sell to the late comers. i here Woolworths is open till midnight if you want wholesale markets veg later in the day.
I suggest getting there early, especially as the weather starts to warm up.

Well, I don’t know about all the nuttiness that preceded it, but I love the rye bread with caraway seeds. Caraway seeds + rye = awesome awesome awesome, and it makes me very happy that I can get a locally-baked bread like it.

If you want to buy produce from the real farmers, this wont make any difference, if you want to buy overpriced value added items then roll on in.

It’s ok. I just found it odd that you publicy stated that you didn’t like yours (most people grumble behind the scenes).

We love the markets and find this move to be more convienient – and I would hope it makes more money to people like you and your employers/colleagues.

No offence but I found your comments to be somewhat typical of the way canberra customers are treated in this town. There seems to be a culture of service industry people ‘doing everyone a favour’ by opening a business. From the delivery guy that knocks off at 3pm, the baker who doesn’t like early starts, the car service place that would never work a weekend – practically, its a 9-5 town – bugger those who cant reorganise their lives around that time.

Yeah, oblivious people with their trolleys which they park right behind you while you are standing still paying for something, so when you turn around you trip over it.

Those trolleys are lethal.

A few stall-holders that I know say it’s already difficult to bring enough stock and find willing staff; some are doubtful as to whether it will pay-off.

I get there at 6.30 in summer and the place is packed.

Haven’t they been unoffically open at 7:30 for a long time already? I’m usually there around 7:45 am and there are people already leaving having finished shopping at that point.

I have been living less than a km from those markets for over 5 years and I have NEVER managed to get there so far. Because I agree with Jivrashia. Well, I may get up before noon on Saturdays, but I need at least 3 hours to drink coffee and read the paper in my PJs and slippers before I feel ready to face any sort of crowd.

And I gathered that they would sell out well before closing time, so will be interesting to see if they will take more stock with the longer hours… I also doubt it.

Agreed. Extended opening hours won’t help the late comers when all of the best produce is cleaned out before 10am. Still, it should help the vendors who have enough stock to continue selling through until midday.

The EPIC Farmers Markets are a religion to many of you.

My religion says it’s a sin to get up before noon on a weekend…

On a serious note, I’ve been there at 10am to be greeted by stalls that have ran out of stock.
Given that as a norm, what are the chances that there would be anything (good) left for anyone trying to take advantage of the extended hours?
