Fatal crash closes Barton Highway

A fatal three-car accident has closed the Barton Highway in both directions.

The crash happened at around 11:00 am near the Barton Highway intersection with Gungahlin Drive at Kaleen. Paramedics, police and firefighters attended the scene, and investigations are continuing.

It’s believed the accident happened as one vehicle was attempting a right-hand turn onto Gungahlin Drive. Three vehicles were involved in the accident and it’s understood that the driver of one vehicle has died. A semi-trailer is on its side, crossing the median strip.

Paramedic treated patients at the scene and ACT Ambulance service treated and transported one male in a serious condition to hospital.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway.

The ESA was unable to confirm the patient’s age.

Police were conducting COVID-19 compliance stops nearby and were on the scene quickly.

ACT Policing is investigating the incident.

ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Ambulance have now left the scene; however, the road will remain closed for several hours while investigations with ACT Policing are underway.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible as significant delays are expected.
