An annual night of nights for strata managers, business owners, support staff, committee members and suppliers to the strata sector, the ACT SCA Excellence Awards recognise great commitment to service, dedication to community and innovation for industry growth.

Local champions Vantage Strata took home the coveted Strata Community Management – Large Business award, topping the podium for their fifth consecutive year and qualifying for the international SCA Australasia Awards.

“The Australasian Awards are obviously very competitive and the crowd is always filled with hard hitters,” Vantage managing director Christopher Miller says.

“No Canberra business has ever won at the SCA international level, but if we were ever going to, I think this year would be the one for Vantage to do it.

“We’re so proud of all we’ve worked on in 2023, producing strong innovations fuelled by exceptional talent.”

Canberra plumbers Water Tight were among the celebrated industry specialists, taking out the Strata Services Business award for their significant growth over the last 12 months.

Vantage’s latest victory follows the announcement that Christopher Miller is passing the reins after eight years in the saddle, to his co-founder and business partner, Rupert Cullen.

“I can’t wait to see Rupert’s leadership develop our offering in the ACT and NSW even further.

“I’ll be transitioning to a role that allows for more time spent on innovation to continue improving our industry in support of all the hard-working staff out there.”

In addition to the Large Business award, Vantage won the President’s Award (Christopher Miller), Strata Community Manager – Rising Star Award (Vanessa Dix) and Essay Award (Kirrilly Gregerson).

Kirrilly Gregerson works as employee experience manager. She says great enthusiasm and pride spread through her team following their success, and celebrations continued into the night.

“The job we complete day to day is like no other. It is gruelling and demanding, understood only by those who have walked a mile in our shoes.

“Our own industry is the only one that can truly provide the recognition deserved by each and every individual who shows up to our world each day, ready to give it their best shot.

“To be acknowledged and congratulated by our peers and business leaders is everything.”

In preparation for her Essay Award entry, Kirrilly reflected on frustrations raised in her own career and by those working close to her.

“I considered how closely major concerns are connected to create a framework that properly identified them, focusing on bridging the gap between positive experiences and poor interactions,” she says.

“It is hard to explain the feeling of winning in the Essay category. It isn’t based on skills I’ve built during my time in the industry. Rather, it was judged on my reflections on a subject I’m passionate about, being quality education, and a means of expression I thoroughly enjoy, being writing.”

Improving industry standards and quality of life for their managers has been a significant focus for Vantage Strata of late, with Christopher echoing the sentiment of Kirrilly’s winning essay.

“Winning awards is obviously a great cause for celebration, but we still have tough days ahead. It’s going to take a lot to get our industry on track. It is my hope that our example helps redefine working in strata.

“The good news is, the staff I have behind me are always ready to strap on their boots, put their mouth guards in and fight for better conditions – not only for us but for our peers across the nation.”

My experience of Vantage Strata is to say no at every turn and do lots of gaslighting.
