Canberra residents thinking of exploring a more creative field have the opportunity to attend an upcoming free workshop taught by the Director of one of Australia’s leading independent performing arts colleges.

“There hasn’t been a better time to be creative”, says Lesley Watson, Founder and Director of Sydney’s Actors College of Theatre and Television (ACTT). “This year has seen Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton launch their first STC 2010 program, leading to an opening of doors for new, exciting talent and fresh energy. From fringe to mainstream venues, there’s big change afoot in Sydney…There must be something in the air!”

Watson is also very positive about openings for actors and creatives in the television and film Industry. “The success of shows like Packed to the Rafters has paved the way for new confidence in local and interstate TV production. It’s also been an incredible year for Australian film-making, with John Marsden’s Tomorrow Series set to create ongoing opportunities for local talent.”

ACTT graduates have been jumping on the wave; this includes Matt Holmes (Sea Patrol), Leeanna Walsman (STC’s Saturn’s Return), George Houvardas (Packed to the Rafters 09 LOGIE nominee), Firass Dirani (09 Heath Ledger Scholarship runner up), and Canberra’s own Sophie Lavers (09 Miss World Australia).

“Interestingly, we found that a lot of actors begin their love of performing in their local area. So we’ve designed a road trip of free workshops that allow people with a passion for theatre, television and film to further explore the craft of acting and learn how the training options at ACTT will help them take advantage of the current creative opportunities.” She adds, “We’ve discovered some very exciting talent in Canberra in the past.”

On Sunday 13 December from 1:30pm – 3:30pm, Lesley Watson will lead a free acting workshop and information session at DNA at the Gorman Arts Centre, Ainslie Avenue,
Braddon. (15+ only)

The workshop will be a fun and invigorating acting class, plus a chance to discuss acting as a career and the range of study options available at ACTT. ACTT runs accredited courses in Acting, Music Theatre, Technical Production and Stage Management, offering students practical experience, skills and qualifications and opening up career opportunities in these increasingly popular creative fields.
So bring a friend and come along ready for creative fun and a unique learning experience.
