Ghouls and rednecks – only a few stab wounds, many superficial cuts

By evollisa - 29 April 2008 22

Porritt case facts from the Higgins decision:

The autopsy evidence has been substantially misquoted. It has been represented as revealing that the deceased had 57 stab wounds. In truth, the report revealed 57 incised wounds, only a few of them being stab wounds. The pathologist, Dr Lynch, noted many relatively superficial incisions.

Posts echoing misinformation in “Stabbed 57 times, but no intent to kill” present Canberra as a redneck wonderland in disguise. Panic driven rapid Aikido blocked exit. Misquoting has successfully incited the ghoul or redneck in many of us.

Various family friends reported at court that Ms Porrit used many unusual discipline techniques like withholding all food in the basement.

This is a rather unusual case. I”m glad I didn’t have to make any decisions about this one.

But sorry, I forgot to include the reason why I made point #1. Those small wounds and the throat wound were all caused during a struggle over the knife because she allegedly tried to slash at him with it. So he didn’t sit down and methodically make tiny nicks and abrasions and scratches on her arms etc.

queenie, you weren’t surprised he snapped …… who said all those alledged cruelties occurred ???

That was the sworn evidence given to the judge by the daughters, the father, Glen Porritt himself, friends of the family. I’m a court transcriptionist, so I get to hear some of the evidence given. Of course, I didn’t hear all of it and the only one with all the facts in front of them is the judge. He’s the only one entitled to judge the case, not casual observers.

Ok, slice up a watermelon 55 times and only stab it twice. It still takes a hell of a long time to do this and in itself indicates intent in my mind. At the end of the day if his mum was a bitch then why did he have any contact with her at all. Turn 16 and move out. No more tyranny abuse whatever. If he was lending them cash then it’s his own bloody fault for maintaining the relationship and probably not as bad as you might think it was.

Oooh boy.
1. The wounds included abrasions, lacerations, shallow slices, a serious wound to the throat and stab wounds to the chest. Most were the non-lethal aforementioned.

2. He did move out and hadn’t had any contact with his parents for a long time beforehand. He didn’t lend them cash, they took away his badly needed acne medicine as a cruel punishment for some small misdemeanor. You can imagine what this did to his self-esteem as a teenage boy. He had to spend $7000 on something to do with repairing the damage caused, I can’t quite remember what. He felt his parents should reimburse him for it and tried to speak with his mother about it on the day of the incident, and she went crazy and told him to get out, pulled a knife on him and went to call police. She’d also previously gotten him arrested and taken to Quamby for breaking into his own home after she locked him and his young sisters out of the house for hours as a punishment.

C’mon Proud…just cause the CT’s say it happend, deosn’t make it so … lol. Seriously, I think the only people that will TRUELY know that answer as to what occurred in thier daily lives is the family memebers themselves. I suppose no one can argue that something was and had gone horribly wrong within that family and is very sad indeed and one of them came to a horrible end, even if what they say about her is true.

Actually I am sure I read in the paper (CT) about how cruel she was and how his sisters have echoed his claims of experiencing such mental cruelty. I feel sorry for the whole family, it appears they had a lot of personal problems. Nothing, except for self defence or protection of others, really ever excuses violent or murderous acts though.

That’s true, but it doesn’t mean stabbed 57 times! Also, his main grievance against his parents wasn’t the money they owed him. It was the way his mother had tyrannised his life by doing things like denying the kids food, abusing them, never having a positive word for him… He was going to sue for compensation. I wasn’t surprised he snapped, frankly. Of course, stabbing people isn’t allowed and that’s why he’s going to jail, but the whole story isn’t out there in the news.

Stabbed a few times still means stabbed no matter how you spin it….

I just love hearing commentary from people like S4anta whose only understanding of the Porritt case is the tiny snippets of misinformation they heard on WIN News.

S4anta 2:11 pm 29 Apr 08

On hindsight agreed. However reading the other bits and pieces on the interweb I still have a significant issue with some people believing that there is arguement for this bloke to be released on account of his mental condition being diagnosed after the fact. I hope young Glenn does get looked after, but going after your own mum on account of her owing you cash is still kind of weak.

FC 1:31 pm 29 Apr 08

Thats what I was thinking circusmind. which paints a very different picture than that of someone being stabbed 57 times.

circusmind 1:25 pm 29 Apr 08

Presumably 57 superficial cuts could be scratches/abrasions from a sturggle??

FC 1:22 pm 29 Apr 08

I don’t think whether the victim is alive or conscious has come into debate?..
I think what it means is that there may be 10 wounds, from on stab. or something like that.
Thats just my understanding though.

S4anta 1:10 pm 29 Apr 08

Ok then. So am I to assume that the wounds that were not stab wounds were pre existing? Or were they inflicted on the victim of incident crime post mortem?

If victim was alive or conscious whilst these superficial cuts were made, I really dont see the difference.
