If you have a passion for space and space exploration, and love a good chat about what exists beyond earth’s atmosphere, then the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex wants to hear from you.

The complex is currently looking for ‘volunteer explainers’ to interact with the public who visit the centre throughout the year.

Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex Education and Outreach Officer Dr Korinne McDonnell said they are looking for someone to offer a stimulating and informative insight into the scientific roles and achievements of the exploration of space.

“Volunteer explainers at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex provide a vital interaction with members of the public who come to our visitor centre throughout the year,” Dr McDonnell said.

“We are calling for people to register their interest in becoming a volunteer explainer at our Visitor Centre.

“If you can spare a day or two a month on weekends or the occasional public holiday, and would like to share some of your interest in space exploration and astronomy with the public, then we’d like to hear from you.”

Dr McDonnell said volunteer explainers must be passionate about space and space exploration, and be good at communicating it.

“Selected applicants will then be offered an opportunity to experience a few days as a volunteer and train alongside a member of our staff. Successful applicants will be selected on their overall suitability, knowledge and interaction with the public.

“Successful applicants will be given further training and documentation to familiarise themselves with the Complex and Visitor Centre operations before they are then rostered for official duties as a volunteer explainer at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex.”

All volunteers at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex must have a current general ACT Working with Vulnerable People card or be able to obtain it.

The suitable person must also be able to:

  • Answer questions about the operation and role of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex
  • Provide information on the various deep space missions
  • Explain a variety of space and astronomy topics
  • Guide visitors and provide information on the Visitor Centre’s exhibits
  • Check and maintain the Centre’s exhibits, interactives and computers
  • Check and monitor the overall cleanliness of the Visitor Centre
  • Interact with the cafe staff
  • Deal with any visitor-related first aid or security issues
  • Provide support during events such as open days or public talks at offsite locations.

Applications to become a volunteer explainer close on Friday, 27 September and can be made by emailing or phone 02 6201 7809 during business hours.

The Canberra Space Centre is located on the grounds of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla, about 35 km southwest of Canberra.
