The ACT Fire Brigade and ACT Rural Fire Service have responded to four small grass fires so far today [Yesterday] during the Total Fire Ban period in the ACT.

All fires were very small in size, the largest 20 metres by 20 metres at Bruce.

The other fires occurred at Civic, Bonython and Belconnen.

The forecast fire danger rating for tomorrow will reduce to High from today’s Severe rating.

The ESA reminds all Canberrans to remain vigilant for the rest of today and report any sign of smoke or fire to emergency triple zero (000) immediately.

Any word on what started these four small fires? Totally unrelated? Serial fire bug? Mowers not avoiding sticks?

Generally it’s kids playing with matches or cigarette butts. Lucky that there’s still a bit of green around so anything that does start takes a while to get going. The green won’t last long with the weather like this though, some paddocks are almost 50-60% cured, albeit with the tinge of green grass under it.
