The Greens Shane Rattenbury has announced a tourism strategy focussing on the Cable Beach caravan park set:

Shane Rattenbury, ACT Greens tourism spokesperson, has released the Greens tourism election commitments, which include calling for a Grey Nomad Tourism Strategy.

“The ACT Greens want a strong, diverse and sustainable local economy and know that a flourishing tourism industry is crucial to achieving that,” Mr Rattenbury said today.

“With Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey talking up massive cuts to the public service here in Canberra, it’s a reminder of the importance for the ACT economy to continue to diversify and support other industries.

The tourism industry contributes around $1.2 billion to the ACT’s economy and employs in the order of 13,000 people.[1]

“The Greens tourism package includes six initiatives which are targeted and will support this important part of our economy.

“Canberra has a very unique set of tourism assets, which are very appealing to growing numbers of retired Australians who travel around our country. A targeted strategy to promote these assets, and better facilitate older tourists makes sense.

“We would deliver a Grey Nomad Tourism Strategy to ensure we are catering for this important sector in the tourism industry. The number of travelling grey nomads will only continue to grow and we need to ensure we are taking their needs into account.

The Greens would also put forward new funds of $225,000 as a first contribution towards developing the funding model for the Australia Forum.
