Happy Birthday Phoenix – Now with photos

By johnboy - 13 November 2008 22

The Phoenix turns 15 tonight.

I imagine a larger than average number of pints will cross the bar tonight.

Anyone want to reminisce with favourite Phoenix memories?

I went through a tight little stage, but I’ve put on weight since.

Seriously, I haven’t seen five on that stage, but four works quite nicely. I just found those picks of tCFB and Mr Fibby I referred to above:

You can’t really get the full effect of the whole band(s) but you get an idea.

I love tight little stages where you are right in the audiences face…

Large stages I hate, you get to far away from each other and the music suffers.

Then again, I wouldn’t want to be in a five piece on that stage 😉

had some top nights there – drinking those shots where you set the bar on fire- however going have disagree on the gigging aspect i hated it for plating shows..

I love the Phoenix mostly because of teh cast of characters you can meet but the last couple of times I’ve gone there I’ve woken up with the worst sore throat and the smell in there appears to have gone beyond just unwashed body to active mould cultures fermenting.

The other thing they do that irks me… and i know it’s tradition but bang that damn bell or pot and yell “phoenix will be closing in xx minutes so F*CK OFF!” I mean seriously your customers who just spent $20 – $100 each do not need to be screamed at to f off just because a certain hour is approaching personally i think it’s just rude and bad business.

Phoenix Memory # 1: Sitting on chairs with springs that always jab you in the arse.

Phoenix Memory # 2: The smell of Daniel McFadden whenever he entered the room.

Definitely my best memory was turning up last year to interview Jack Mancor, and having seen him and Owen Campbell play to a very small crowd of more sedentary (though very appreciative) punters at the Merry Muse on the Friday night, finding the place packed to the gills with young, energetic funsters who made the night incredibly memorable.

Pics here:

Close run second was a Crooked Fiddle Band/Mr Fibby gig sometime late last year.

My little bro’ used to play regularly at The Phoenix many years ago (mid 90s — must have been when it was relatively new), but I only got the chance (read: made the effort) to see him play once. Still a very much treasured memory.

Favourite Phoenix moment? When smoking was banned indoors. I think the place rose from the ashes and is much more pleasant now.

If you’re doing it properly, you shouldn’t remember your favourite Phoenix moments.

15 years.

I’m officially depressed.

I remember the first birthday party.

You mean go there after avoiding soap, a comb and razor for months, wear clothing from the tip and smoke joints while stealing other peoples beer? Ah, the good times.
