With the Southern Cross Health club relocating to their new state-of-the-art health and wellness centre on the old ‘Pitch and Putt’ site in Phillip near the Woden town centre, Canberra residents are being offered a rare opportunity to create their own private home gym for a fraction of the price you would normally pay.

As part of the auction, their entire collection of retired commercial-grade gym equipment including treadmills, cross-trainers, exercise bikes, weights machines and free weights will be sold, unreserved, on Canberra’s premier auction site ALLBIDS, with the sale drawing to a close on the 6th of March.

One thing the ACT prides itself on is our title as the healthiest place in Australia, with a longer life expectancy, lower rates of major illness and more active and healthy lifestyles compared to other areas throughout the Nation. However, there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

According to the most recent Healthy Weight Action Plan developed by the ACT Government, the proportion of adults who are considered overweight or obese in the ACT has risen from just 22.9% to a shocking 63.6% since 1995, putting a growing number of people at significant risk of premature cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and a host of other life-threatening conditions.

The report largely attributed this increase to a combination of living a sedentary lifestyle and a significant intake of high energy foods—things which, as most of us are already well-aware, aren’t doing our health any good.

While the ACT Government is continually introducing measures to encourage us to move more and eat healthier, we all know it ultimately comes down to the individual to make it happen. But what’s stopping us from making the necessary changes to live the healthier lifestyles we know we should strive for?

If the response is something along the lines of ‘I have a desk job’, ‘I can’t afford a gym membership’ or ‘I simply don’t have the time to exercise’, these excuses simply don’t stand up if we truly care about our health and wellbeing—and creating a personal home gym could be the perfect solution.

Elliptical cross trainer

No home gym is complete without an elliptical cross trainer.

When you have a home gym, you really won’t have any excuses not to exercise because time is no longer a contributing factor. After all, not having the time to make the journey from the couch to the treadmill to spend 30 minutes working out simply isn’t going to cut the mustard.

With more than 200 pieces of commercial gym equipment up for grabs with no minimum sale price, if you’ve been wanting to take the first step to a healthier version of you, it’s well worth a look to see what bargains you might find.

Hi John,

We are glad you read the description and realised this piece did not suit your particular needs. We have indicated that it is a piece that would be ideal for physiotherapy and body strengthening. We take pride in accurately describing all items listed on our site and ensure wherever possible inspection is available. Please keep an eye out as gym equipment comes into ALLBIDS regularly, sometimes due to refurbishment, liquidation and via private vendors. Thanks the ALLBIDS Team

No free weights, no barbells or dumbbells. Watch what you are bidding on and examine the pictures very closely.

Much of this equipment is not weight resistance but air pressure loaded like the old Hydra Gym equipment in the early 1980s. Think of that air pressure resistance unit which stops your screen door from slamming. That’s what it is.

I tried bidding on a leg adductor/abductor and took it for granted there was an adjustable weight stack. When the mouse rested on a pic which showed the air unit the red flags went up. I was halfway thru signing in when I saw that and cancelled the intended bid.

The problem with air pressure equipment is that the only resistance is what you put in. You can’t have forced reps, you can’t progress upwards. It is just the same easy effort all the time. I didn’t know such useless and poorly designed equipment was still being made and I’m glad I was never a member of a gym which had such slack equipment like that.
