[WILD UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOUR ALERT]

Radio news said the bombies are at Flynn, the school is closed and that people are being told to leave the area. What is going on at Flynn???

We love this stuff on Riot, as we get some great wild guesses, some funny comments and occasional break a story. BUT if you are going to post one of these add some detail FFS! The time you heard it (‘I just heard’ doesn’t cut it as Johnboy isn’t sitting full-time at the Riot desktop anymore), which radio station, etc. Its not much to ask and we know you are up to it.

.. at least with the school closed there were less kids to worry about!

Not something that would cheer up the locals.

Slightly ironic that the dog got your sympathy, when it would have been your inattentiveness to the surroundings that would have caused the dog to have been “poor”.

Unless that dog was actually short of a few bob.

btw, you just admitted breaking the law. Hope you posted that from the public library.

I imagine dr phil was on foot, with the simultaneous mobile phone operation and McDonalds eating. At least I hope so.

There was a word omitted in an earlier update to this story that said a plumber had been set on fire, which made me chuckle.

(crying) I better go to TAFE and learn to post (crying) FFS, trying to use my mobile when I did that post, in a hurry, late for work, almost ran over a poor dog as she ran across the road eating McDonalds. PLEASE FORGIVE ME RIOT GODS, PLEASE!!!!

what road was the dog crossing?

God you are all hard.

A potentially huge story could have been occuring here.

Dr Phil did his best to get an alert our to us asap.

Every one worries about the facts.

Tch.

The facts either exist, or they do not.

If they do, Dr Phil was the first to advise us. If they don’t, then this has all been a waste of time!

Hearing this is something I believe your namesake on television would scoff at!

Perhaps rather than attempt a piss-poor post because you’re in a big hurry, maybe you could pay attention to what you’re doing instead and:

1: post later, or

2: not post at all.

Between “Amature”, “Privelege” and “somethiing”, it’s been a bit of a week for mis-spelled headlines.

Excusable (it only happened once), inexcusable (happened frequently, and alternated with correct spelling, because the computer had a corrupt dictionary), and a typo.

This is why I hate it when my own lack of QA gets compounded by someone else’s lack of QA, and shitwork makes it into deployment. 🙁

Why was the dog eating McDonalds?

Apparently there was also a car on fire around the same time (yesterday) over in Lyneham (cyclists at work in Belco were comparing stories).

Because of the way acetylene is stored, it is potentially an explosion hazard for quite some time after being heated.

FYI
The nasty stuff would have been acetylene. The acetylene in cylinders becomes highly unstable after being exposed to heat and can explode up to 24 hours later.

Not original poster – 106 had coverage of Flynn being closed down and the pre-school not operating due to a plumbers van having suspicious substances in it. 666 on the way home said the van was burnt out at 2am and the surrounding area, including some houses being cordoned off until lunchtime – something about the burnt out van having nasty stuff in it that the police were worried about! at least with the school closed there were less kids to worry about!

AFP press release (not online yet so can’t link to it)

Police operation at Flynn ends

ACT Policing has concluded its cordon and containment of potentially explosive material at Flynn.

Police and ACT Fire Brigade attended a fire in a plumbers van at George Simpson Oval, Flynn around 2.20am today.

Due to the volatility of material inside the van, as a precaution police evacuated a number of nearby homes. The Flynn Preschool was also closed for the day.

The Officer in Charge of Belconnen Police Station, Sergeant Tanya Swift, extended her apologies to those members of the public who were inconvenienced by this incident and thanked them for their cooperation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen suspicious persons or activity around a white van in the vicinity of George Simpson Oval in Flynn late last night or in the early hours of this morning to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on http://www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

i heard this on the radio (104.7) this morning (7am news) as well. apparently someone had set fire to a plumbers van in the middle of an oval
