Sweet Bones Bakery has been a fixture in Braddon for over a decade. Perpetually busy with fans among vegans and non-vegans alike, they’ve created a space for good, plant-based food to shine. And now they’re going suburban with a second location in Scullin.

Some of you will be reading this and thinking, ‘Scullin? Really?!’ But it’s actually a great choice!

While Scullin shops have previously held a reputation for being a bit of a ghost town, a thriving community group has been hard at work for the last few years to revitalise the space and make it a community hub once again.

One of their projects was a small volunteer-run shop called The Scullin Traders which sold grocery items, newspapers and products made by local crafters. The project finished in 2020 due to COVID-19, but the seed had been sown and people were keen to see more things happening at the shops.

Sweet Bones has taken over the space formerly occupied by the Scullin Traders. So far the community has overwhelmingly embraced the cafe: they’ve been busy every day since they opened.

There are lots of young families living in the area, so there are plenty of parents and bubs during the day, as well as people who are still working from home but need to escape for a quick caffeine fix and something sweet.

Owner Russell Brindley told Region Media that he and wife Emily were ‘humbled’ by the positive response and are really pleased to see locals getting on board.

“With Braddon there’s always trouble with parking, but it’s so accessible here,” he said.

“It’s great to see the place so busy!”

The shop has been gutted and remodelled with a brand new kitchen and airy cafe space. The exposed brick has a rustic-looking Sweet Bones logo on one wall, lots of art hanging on the other, and plenty of macrame plant holders hanging from the high ceiling. It’s a fun and welcoming space with a mix of couches and table seating.

The menu at Scullin stays true to the Sweet Bones ethos with lots of creative vegan delights, and there are a few extra treats thanks to the addition of a deep fryer. That means fans can expect to see doughnuts and loaded fries on the menu in the future. Russell says they will continue to expand the menu as they settle into the space and get a sense of what works.

I went with a classic Smashed Avo Toast, which has a lot more than just smashed avo! The addition of sautéed mushrooms, sliced tomato, wilted spinach and deliciously crisp pickled red onions on top of grain sourdough make this feel more like a Big Brekkie than just an avo on toast!

Iced buns

And I couldn’t go without having a Cinnabun to accompany my cheeky second coffee. These popular scrolls have been selling out regularly and it seemed like most customers gave in to temptation when faced with the seriously impressive cakes cabinet stacked full of muffins, brownies, cookies and a luscious looking Oreo cheesecake.

Sweet Bones is an excellent addition to the Scullin shops, which is beginning to look a lot more like the thriving hub that the community group has been working towards.

Sweet Bones in Scullin is located at 3/3 Scullin Place and in Braddon at 8/18 Lonsdale Street (entrance via Elouera Street). Check their website for opening hours.

People power. All credit to the owners and the community who backed the initial concept.
