A Canberra-based construction company is helping builders advance their careers beyond traditional roles.

BACE Project Management’s Builder 2 Developer Program is designed for builders ready to leverage their skills for greater opportunities.

BACE Project Management director Claudio Alarcon says many builders can achieve more with proper guidance.

“Builders who feel they’ve reached their career peak might find new avenues for growth and investment through development,” he says. “They’re already well positioned to manage their own projects and potentially increase profits.”

Extensive experience in design and 15 years of work in construction management gave Claudio deep insights into project development – from planning to completion – and an understanding of the barriers builders face when stepping into this arena.

A workshop on development fundamentals revealed to him that builders had the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue development, and were only lacking the mentorship to succeed.

“I held myself back many years from branching out into development. If someone had guided me on navigating the challenges, I could have fast-tracked my journey into that realm,” he says.

“Builders already have many tools in their toolbox, and that extra knowledge would take them the rest of the way and open up a world of possibility.”

BACE’s Builder 2 Developer Program offers builders comprehensive training in property development. Participants receive monthly mentorship, learning to identify suitable business structures, how to secure development sites with no money down and navigate zoning and regulatory requirements. They also consult with legal and financial experts to explore financing and legal options.

Claudio emphasises that transitioning to development can be seamless for builders.

“Starting with small projects like renovations (flips), knockdown rebuilds, and dual occupancies can quickly lead to larger commercial ventures.”

He says the long-term goal is to create passive income, allowing builders to enjoy their achievements without enduring long work hours well into their retirement.

“In the end, it’s about future-proofing for builders… If you don’t want to be doing long days of gruelling labour long after retirement, you need to look at leveraging those hard-won skills to create passive income sources for yourself,” Claudio says.

“The ultimate goal of the Builder 2 Developer Program is to empower builders to get to a point where they can start enjoying what they’ve built.”
