From the Crikey sealed section we get this piece on ALP factional manoeuvrerings to see who can get the best position to try and lever Bob McMullan out of the seat of Fraser.

“5. Is Labor lining up Bob McMullan in the ACT?

Hugo Kelly reports:

ACT Labor Left heavy George Wasson is trying to get his faction’s
support to take a tilt at incumbent Bob McMullan, the member for
Fraser, for the 2007 election. But it’s not always easy in the
pre-selection game – ACT branch secretary Matt Cossey [RA’s link] also fancies
himself as a McMullan replacement and is working hard to that end too.

McMullan, Labor’s finance spokesman until Mark Latham threw a
hissy-fit and tossed him from the shadow Cabinet after last year’s
election loss, has made it clear he intends to stay and maintain his
winning ways – relying on the largely non-factionalised ALP rank and
file to support him strongly as they have in the past.

At the 2004 election McMullan won a 3% swing and was elected without
going to preferences on a two-party preferred vote of over 63% –
hardly a groundswell for his removal.

But with factional warfare consuming Victoria and NSW Labor, why
should the states have the fun and games to themselves? Maybe the
Capital Territory ALP can score an own-goal for itself.”

Based on no insider knowledge I’d think that a good place to start looking would be high profile unsuccessful ACT candidates. Though I don’t think it could be Captain Mike as there wasn’t a single exclamation point in the story!

Loadedog – What makes you think the stacking hasn’t already been done?

It’ll be interesting to see who the challenger turns out to be if the other names are just stalking horses.

I agree with the other Anonymous. Anonymously leaking entirely false claims that someone else is trying to knock off a local federal MP (in order to divert attention from their own group’s naked ambitions), has been the modus operandi of a certain group within the ACT ALP in the last year or so. Business as usual, I’d say.

And the dead relatives…

Don’t forget to sign your pets up as well.

I’d think he could be rolled pretty easily without branch stacking. Not that I’d think he’d be rolled one way or the other, my guess it who ever leaked this (I’d say neither of the people mentioned) is trying to line themselves up for when Bob does finally retire.

The faintest whiff of branch stacking will see me and, I hope, many others joining the local branch in support of McMullin who is a pearl amongst swine.
