“José Gaspar (The solitude of power)” presents the philosophy of government of the man who is regarded as the father of the independence of Paraguay and who was later proclaimed “Perpetual Dictator” (1813-1840): Doctor José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia.
It tells us about his confrontation with the great foreign powers of the time – Spain, England, Portugal, and Argentina – as well as his conflicts with the church and with his former allies – most of whom he had executed.
As the author states, “”José Gaspar is the prototype of every being with an excessive longing for absolute power”.
The sub-title “The solitude of power” refers to a moment during the play when the dictator finds himself in total isolation, forsaken by those who at other times took advantage of his power. At that moment the dictator feels the loneliness that such “power” generates. Likewise, this play tells us how every authoritarian government has certain characteristics that are repeated throughout history.
Finally, “José Gaspar” brings up that “conducting thread” that runs through the history of all Latin American countries.
“José Gaspar” (The solitude of power)” has been staged in Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, the USA, France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain and India.
Actor:
Jorge Ramos, the actor in this “one-man show” has over 30 years experience in theatre and television.
