Just what is the go with 100 jobs in 100 days?

Many people wonder about the relationship between the Liberal Party and the operators of Canberra Airport. Those people also wonder if that relationship has had anything to do with the unusual helpfulness of the National Capital Authority when it comes to approving the Airport’s ambitious development program.

Which is why my eyebrow was raised by a media release by Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Kevin Andrews, praising the Airport’s second “100 jobs in 100 days” campaign.

Apparently this put 639 people into work. I’m having trouble understanding what the Airport actually did and why the Government doesn’t usually do whatever the hell that was. One would hope the Job Network in the Canberra Region can place more people than this over the usual course of its business.

Can anyone make sense of this cosy relationship?

sorry Johnboy, but Swaggie the plan was approved ages ago and the strengthening is a draft variation on that plan. Carrying it out at the same time is logical.

b2 – YES THE GOVERNMENT IS PAYING “$28.5 million”

read it and weep.

b2 – the master plan was approved ages ago and that included extension by 450 and then 600 metres at the Jerrabomberra end. This strenghthening work announced yesterday is completly seperate but will be carried out at the same time.

johnboy I don’t think the government is paying for the runway.

From what I remember, they had applied for a variation to the master plan to strenghten the runway while they extend it, and Warren Truss has just approved that!

We can only hope that generating free PR for the maligned Job Network wasn’t related to the decision to spend nigh on $30 mil of public money improving the airport’s facilities.

On top of which Warren Truss has just announced that the Government had agreed to pay for the strengthening of the Airport’s main runway – JH must be eyeing up a 747!
