Are you fearing all the festive fun (and food) might take a toll? Looking for a fun way to set some fitness goals for the new year?
The Canberra Day Fun Run returns for 2025 and registrations are open now.
The second-year event is packed full of incentives to do yourself and the rest of the community some good. Hosted by the ACT Government in partnership with the Stromlo Running Festival, all registration fees go to Hands Across Canberra as part of the annual Canberra Day Appeal.
The ACT’s community foundation, Hands Across Canberra works with 350 local charities every year to raise funds, invest them and make grants that help build a better Canberra for everyone. In June this year, Hands Across Canberra and partners the Snow Foundation, John James Foundation and Aspen Medical Foundation gave $1.5 million in grants to more than 60 projects.
The Canberra Day Fun Run is as tough or easy as you want it to be. You can try for a hard-fought personal best over 10 km, work up a handy sweat at 5 km or stroll through the 2 km course, perhaps with a bunch of friends (or even in costume!).
Hands Across Canberra CEO Genevieve Jacobs says the fun run is an excellent opportunity to celebrate our beautiful city and benefit the local charities who work on the frontlines, helping our most vulnerable community members.
“We had a terrific start to the event last time with more than 700 runners and we’re hoping to more than double the number of runners in 2025,” Ms Jacobs said.
“Canberra is a city full of runners, whether they’re hardened competitors or just beginning their running journey. This event is family-friendly and fun, welcoming runners from all ages and stages.”
The 10 km and 5 km courses loop around bridge to bridge through the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin and Commonwealth Park while the 2.5 km course takes you through the park and along Rond Terrace.
There’s a staggered start from 8 am at Stage 88, ensuring you finish in plenty of time for a relaxing long weekend with food, fun and a makers market at the finishing line in Commonwealth Park.
Ms Jacobs said Hands Across Canberra hoped many runners would also take up the chance to raise funds for their favourite charity with sponsorships for the run.
“Get a team together, ask your family and friends to sponsor you, then donate those funds. You’ll help all the charities Hands Across Canberra works with throughout the year and at the same time, give something meaningful to your own favourite cause.
“We can turn every kilometre into a contribution and every finish line into a triumph for our community. It’s the essence of giving where you live to solve local problems in your own community.”
