Live in a fairy tale at this Bywong cottage, but for real

On paper, 68 Bohmers Lane in Bywong sits on seven acres of land and offers three bedrooms, two bathrooms and four car spaces. But in the flesh, it’s something else.

As All Real Estate NSW agent Mick Davis explains, the current owner is a “free-spirited sort of person who likes to do things differently”.

“She bought the place in 2017 and freshened it up. Internally, she did renovations to the kitchen to give it more of a country feel, such as the unique wooden benches and antique-style kitchen cupboards,” Mick says.

Two words are coming to the minds of those who have seen the property so far – cute and cosy.

“People who see the house see the good foundations to expand on and do some further renovations to make it their own.”

The exterior was originally white, but the walls have been painted a grey-blue which contrasts nicely with the white timber and brushed black metal trimmings.

The interior has also been repainted in a light, neutral pallet. Natural light and farm views add a sense of space and are a constant reminder of the beauty of the region.

The ground story has a covered veranda, the open-plan living and dining areas, kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom and en-suite.

Timber frames the fireplace, while the timber floors and the minimalist metal light fittings tie the living and dining rooms together, reinforcing what the view from the large windows is already telling you: you’re out in the country in a quaint cottage.

The rustic timber benchtop and corrugated iron splashback might suggest a country kitchen, but nothing could be further from the truth. Coupled with pristine white cabinetry and all the modern conveniences of a dishwasher, gas stove and 900 mm electric oven, not only is it incredibly practical, but it also makes for a charming and inspiring feature of the house.

The laundry branches off the kitchen while another door leads into the main bathroom. The master bedroom comes off the lounge and includes a giant walk-in wardrobe and freshly renovated ensuite.

Up the central stairs and a landing opens into a bedroom on either side, ideal for guest bedrooms or the kids. Mick, for one, says that for a young family, this would be a dream.

“If I were a kid, living upstairs with that steepled roofline and view out over the paddocks, it would like living in a Disney story. They could have their own palace upstairs.”

Mick says that many of the people who are looking at the property are looking at downsizing. It would make the perfect hobby farm, as seven acres of land is easier enough to look after while still offering plenty of room for stock, veggie gardens, and maybe a few chickens.

The current owner was a big lover of heavy horses and kept and rode them for a hobby. Mick adds that there were also pigs in some of the back paddocks at some point.

“She was living there on her own before getting married and moving to another rural property. Since then, tenants have looked after the place and their horses currently roam the paddocks.”

Mick describes it as a beautifully peaceful property.

“On spring days like these, it’s nice to go and sit down by the creek and just read a book,” he says.

A stone’s throw away from the main cottage lies a studio apartment with a kitchenette and bathroom. While not approved by the council yet, it offers the opportunity for dual-occupancy and additional income.

And as someone who also lives in the area, Mick is qualified to report that Bywong is a “hidden gem”. The small town is half an hour’s drive from the Canberra Airport and Civic, and a mere 10 minutes from the conveniences of Bungendore.

“This unique property is situated in a highly sought-after area and won’t be on the market for long.”
