Magistrate Maria Doogan gets a slap

The ABC has a story on a second reprimand for Magistrate Maria Doogan, altering sentences after stuffups:

Justice Richard Refshauge said the Magistrate intended to impose a sentence of 48 months imprisonment, but she actually sentenced Elson to 30 months.

Justice Refshauge noted that bench sheets had been amended to show the correct sentence.

He said it was worrying that this appeared to be the second time the Magistrate had altered a sentence in her Chambers and called the amendment improper.

Hopefully they can get it right in future. It’s only people’s lives.

How the hell do these people come up with the numbers on how many months/years that the successfully prosecuted should be locked up?

I always believed that it was a wet finger in the wind…

I wonder if she gave Refshauge the evil eye with the cat’s bum mouth expression when he pointed out her error?

Yea, I saw that, amnd wondered how a Magistrate who fails to dot the Is and cross the Ts can just make up her own, second decision later on. Quite bizarre.

Are you talking about Doogan or the Oyster?
