Man to face court over violent sexual assault

A 52-year-old Hawker man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning charged with the violent sexual assault of a woman on Saturday night.

Police will allege the man prevented the woman from leaving his residence and threw several knives at her, before assaulting and attempting to choke the woman. It is alleged he then sexually assaulted her.

Police arrested the man on Sunday afternoon (28 June) and he was taken to hospital for assessment under police guard. Police will allege he also assaulted a nurse who was attempting to give him medication.

The man has been charged with sexual assault; sexual intercourse without consent; forcible confinement; choking, suffocating and strangling another person; assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, and assaulting frontline community service worker.
