Sophie Lash and Chey Novak are a mother-daughter duo that are all about radiating positivity and living a healthy and holistic lifestyle – both in mind and body. The two have always been thick as thieves but their relationship entered a new phase as business partners when they opened Bodhifit Studio early last year.

“Mum and I have always been really close. We attended weekly Hatha and Raja yoga classes over an eight-year period with our mentor Bill Giles. This is where our journey started. We were given the opportunity to do a teacher training yoga course over a year through Bill, so we did! We never actually intended on teaching classes and more so did it for self-knowledge and self-growth, but after completing the course we really felt like we needed to share everything we had learnt and experienced with people, and also help them lead a happier and healthier life,” said Chey.

“We originally wanted a hall to run just 1 or 2 classes a week but found it hard to find one that worked for us. We then came across our current space and everything seemed to fall into place (availability, price, loans etc)! We began with Hatha Yoga classes in March 2017 then added Yoga Sculpt in October. It’s only just been over a year since we opened, but we are so happy with the studio and the little community we have created!”

Class is in session with studio dog Aston.

Their light-filled Queanbeyan studio has quickly gained a loving following for their Hatha Yoga and Yoga Sculpt signature classes. Hatha yoga is all about improving strength, flexibility and coordination, and focuses on de-stressing and consciously relaxing both the body and mind, while Yoga sculpt is all about lengthening, toning your body and learning to activate the correct muscles. They work with slower and controlled movements which target specific areas of the body, focusing around the hips, thighs, abs and arms to create tone, deep definition and stability.

“Teaching people about health and the techniques they can carry through their everyday life”, was their inspiration for opening the studio, said Chey, with the added bonus of being able to work together. “It’s awesome working as a mother-daughter duo as we both have the same understanding of what we want to teach people. We both live the same healthy lifestyle and have the same values, which I think makes the studio what it is. It gives us the freedom to build the studio the way we want and change it along the way if we need to. We work as a great team and always dreamed of doing something together to help people because of the personal journey we have been on.”

“Since opening the studio, so many Queanbeyan locals have expressed how much they have wanted something like this in their city. We have built a little community of businesses around us and have found that businesses in Queanbeyan always support each another, even when they’re from completely different industries. It’s really lovely and makes our work environment super friendly.”

Bodhifit Studio is located at Unit 2/1, Buttle Street, Queanbeyan.
