New Year's Eve 2009

If you’re sensible and have a girlfriend – wife – spouse – partner you spend New Year’s Eve at a private party.

Civic is for the terminal ravers and the young and lonely hoping to find someone with which to bump uglies.

But for you dear reader I left behind a rather good private party to document the offerings of Civic.

I have to say I was actually rather impressed.

The fireworks were good. The entertainment in both Civic Square and Garema Place was going off.

Police were swarming all over trouble frankly before it even looked like trouble. (I will defer to their experience and un-impaired judgment).

The only trouble I had was from a small spiky headed moron who took it on himself to decide which photographs I should or should not take. If I was younger and dumber we’d both have ended up locked up with my camera smashed and this morning I’m still wondering if it would have been worth it.

I found it somewhat ironic that the large dancing crowds in the alcohol free areas, enjoying the Government supplied entertainment were in large part doing so with the benefit of illegal substances.

After one look at the taxi queue I decided I was better off walking.

So dear rioters, if you went out (stay at homes please refrain) how was your night?

My friends & I partied at the Hush Lounge, the new glbt venue in Woden. It was a really great night with the bar putting on food, great entertainers like the ones you see at Circue de Solei!!! Awesome, and then there were DJ’s from Sydney who rocked the place all night. So much fun

Good to hear the Enormous Horns are still going strong.

I was keen to go along and see the Enormous Horns. Very entertaining band. I was most disappointed to see on the program that they didn’t even start till after 11pm 🙁 No way my youngest would last till then so I stayed home.

Me too. But like you, there was no way that my kids would have lasted til then so we were home by the time they took the stage.

We ended up parked off Flynn Drive with camp chairs, chilled wine and the kids for a perfect view of all the true airborne fireworks at 9pm. And afterwards, while watching the huge line up of cars on the opposite side of the lake trying to leave at a snail’s pace, we simply loaded up our car and drove home. No line up whatsoever. We even had plenty of time for a last look at all the Christmas lights on houses in our local area on the way there.

With the kids in bed, we watched the rest of The Full Monty and drank champagne on comfy chairs while waiting for the midnight fireworks coverage from Sydney. Don’t ask me why though, I actually preferred our own ones earlier that night.

Maybe next year we’ll get ourselves a babysitter … but then the thought of tackling any NYE crowds isn’t really appealing to me.

JB is the intro sentence intentionally aimed at male readers only, or just by accident?

It is reminding me of that ad that got taken off the telly

‘Bring your car, bring your trailor, bring your wife, and Save!’

i watched the 9pm 1s from red hill, it was full of kids and there parents

yes, but it’s too crowded already 😉

Did anyone watch the fireworks from Mt Ainslie – I’m wondering if it was busy?

Is there anywhere else to drive to watch the fireworks that isn’t crowded and is easy to drive home from?

Some youngish guys were letting off fireworks at Tuggers TC this morning at about 6.30am.

I went into Civic for a while last night and was surprised at the number of Police I saw. They almost outnumbered revellers. I guess with the Summernats in town they didn’t want a repeat of the riots from several years ago last time the Summernats and NYE coincided. Prevention is better than cure I suppose.

I wandered into the Casino for a while, first time visitor. I’m not a gambler except for the odd Tatts form or a modest wager on the nags annually in November, I was just showing an interstate visitor some of the sights of Canberra. I was a little surprised by the (lack of) dress sense of some of the patrons. I’m talking about the dirty jeans, black “Megadeath” type t-shirts, flannelette shirts and desert boots. I had to pinch myself to make sure I hadn’t landed on Planet Charnwood. Maybe they were Summernats attendees?

Quiet one here too had a good BBQ and spent the night playing video games. Went to watch the fireworks last minute away from the crowds.

did they have fireworks at tuggers? we heard several rather large explosions from isabella plains at midnight. we also had some moron with something big go bang early on in the night… freaked both my 3 y.o and my dog big time.

We just sat around for drinks on the veranda, with the wii and playstation with singstar going. (sorry neighbours!) fun times, better than wrestling with the crowds, and easily able to stumble into my own bed shortly after midnight!

Someone was letting off proper fireworks down tuggers way, could see them from our vantage point, unsure if they were organised ones or ones someone had stolen.
At least they let them off close enough to the stroke of midnight, the ones from civic square were almost 2 minutes late. Somone must have forgot to push the button or hasn’t learnt how to tell the time yet.. Maybe they can add it to the list of things to improve for next year.

Glad I was in Newcastle :p Danced til 1 to PNAU and then went to a friend’s place and played board games 🙂
