Know an unsung hero who deserves some recognition? Or somebody doing it tough who could use a lift?
Social worker come photographer Candice Jones wants you to put them in the frame. Hers, in fact.
As part of her ‘More Than Words Project’, Candice will take submissions and select one worthy subject a month for a free 30-45 minute photo session, along with posting their story on her web page and blog.
So far she has four this month and is about to make her choice. It’s going to be a tough decision.
Candice said doing something for others had been part of her former professional life and now she wanted to do it as a photographer, taking the pay-it-forward approach.
“Running my own business I have the opportunity to give things away if I choose,” she said.
“There are people in the community who often don’t get noticed and don’t get the praise they deserve, and sometimes that can make all the difference.”
Candice set up her small photography business, More Than Words, after moving from the Central Coast with her husband and toddler last year. She had her second child soon after arriving in the national capital and finds the business is something she can fit around family life.
Specialising in family portraits and birthdays, with the occasional wedding, she named the business ‘More Than Words’ because “that’s how I feel about photography, it transcends those memories that we talk about, it shows what’s going on and captures the moment”.
She loves Canberra and its seasons and has her special shooting locations around the capital, or she can go to a subject’s home.
Submissions so far include a refugee woman, a mother of six who dropped everything to care for a friend in need, a woman who had to leave a relationship with very little and a volunteer whose father has a terminal illness.
She feels incredibly privileged to hear their amazing stories and wants to hear more.
Submissions for October have closed and a recipient has been chosen, but Candice is still searching for inspiration for the following months.
