North Canberra’s best chicken sandwich???

By spin462002 - 13 April 2007 15

Tell us your sandwich secrets? Where is the best chicken sandwich to be found in north Canberra and what is so great about it?

It’s time to share with the disillusioned among us who have resigned to the fact they will have to make it themselves or go to their brother’s place whenever they need such a gastronomic delight!

thanks : )

ugh. sick of chipotle. The yanks here put it on everything. Yuck.

I’m amazed at Chicken Gourmet. In 1977, going down to my dorm-mate’s family home at Merimbula when boarding school let us out, we’d be unattended in civic (wow!) and buy us a chook at Chicken Gourmet and then guzzle it at the back of the greyhound or murrays or whatever the bus was.

And have stuffing fights. And the poor driver i guess had to clean it up but 12 year olds don’t care.

And as long as we’re making our own, smear a little chipotle in adobo over the bread (or stir it into the mayo) and add a few sprigs of coriander.

CREAM

Tried it, but kept having to pick astroturf out of my teeth.

To add to the “make it yourself” crowd …

Bbq chook, Woolworths brand ‘complete crunchy salad’ and cheese and bacon rolls. Then head down to the lake with a bottle of champagne and some good company, and follw it with a coffee and some sticky date pudding at your favourite cafe.

Chicken Gourmet is one of the few late night places that still tastes good if your not pissed. Have you tried the pizza vendors sober?

Chicken Gourmet goes a pretty good chicken burger/roll, and its even better late at night after a few beers 🙂

Even tho its microwaved – A kingsley chicken sub tastes good…. Chicken and gravy – great combo! Mmmmmm

But i still like the thought of going and buying a BBQ chook, some nice soft bread/rolls, cheese salad and drown it in Honey Mustard dressing..

(hmm im really hungry now… )

Certainly not the Blue Olive in Civic, their service was glacially slow (I stood and watched the staff chatting instead of dealing with orders for 10 minutes), the sandwich overpriced and very stingy with the fillings.

Degree (though it’ll always be Calypso to me) at ANU, get them to make up a roll with chicken, avocado, lettuce, sun-dried tomato, mayo and alfalfa on ciabatta.

There’s a little shop down the road from me that makes a delicious sweet onion chicken teriyaki, it’s a footlong and comes in under $10.00*_*

Questioning weather or not this is a serious post I offer the following.

Not that hard to make yourself.

BBQ chook, lettuce, (real) mayonnaise, Avocado and a ciabatta or pane de casa roll (or any chewy crust generic roll).

Allavailable from the “G” or Gunghalin Marketplace just down the road.
If you cant make it from this list of ingredients – then I cant think of anywhere my side that would sell them.

If you’re after one at lunchtime at Woden, the best ones are at the Tea Caddy at the Woden interchange. I have tried almost all the sandwich places in Woden and these guys are the best. The bread options are diverse, fresh from the bakery, and they will slice to your preference. They are also always generous with portions and their sandwich prices are reasonable (compared to others).

The only thing you should make sure is that you don’t get a newbie making your sandwich.
