The Canberra Times is reporting that the Canberra Centre Darrell Lea is to be the sole survivor of the local four stores as the administrators swing their axes.

The Darrell Lea stores at Westfield Woden, Tuggeranong Plaza and Westfield Belconnen will close by 2pm on Saturday, with most ceasing trade from today.

Only the Darrell Lea store at the Canberra Centre has survived the cuts.

Australia-wide, 32 Darrell Lea stores will be closed, resulting in the loss of 167 casual jobs, 16 part-time jobs and 15 full-time jobs. Thirty-four stores will remain open.

With so much high quality chocolate flooding the market in recent years in some ways it’s surprising they’ve lasted this long.

Aww what’s with all the Darrell Lea hate? I have fond memories of their giant lollypops and those little Bo Peep jars of lollies as a kid! They were great! I bought some nice Valentine’s Day goodies in there this year.

It’s interesting though. Perhaps this public antipathy is the core of their problems. They have failed to keep pace with the times and competitors have moved in to occupy that place in our psyches that they used to hold.

Me, I used to live down the road from their factory in Melbourne and just walking past the shps remind me of chocolate laden air

Not really a fan or gourmet lollies, so this won’t make much difference to my life.

A few people will need to find new jobs, which is a pain.

My issue with Darrell Lea has always been that they are not Haigh’s.

Haigh’s is better capitalised, but still in trouble. Buy those souvenirs while you still can.

Darrell Lea sell chocolate? I’m not sure I’ve ever bought anything but their licorice – and I’d be sad if that wasn’t available any more.

Hopefully the former customers will now spend their money on fruit and vegetables and do a bit of exercise.

Well that leaves us with one more than we need…
